Troussier, better in the second division?

 　　SHENZHEN, South China, March 24 (Xinhua) -- Phillipe Troussier's Shenzhen Ruby¹ suffered a bitter 1-0 defeat against Shanghai East Asia at their first home match in the Chinese second division league here on Saturday, overshadowing their ambition to return to the top fight.

　　It was the third day after the Frenchman's 57-year birthday when he returned to Bao'an stadium after the disappointing season. Fans could read no smile at all from his face. Certainly not a good time for parties and celebrations as he was facing one of the toughest times in his coaching career.

　　"Although we lost the game, we played as a very good team today in the second half. We have done all we could to keep it going," said Troussier after the match.

　　The "White Witch Doctor" had waded² through a baffling season last year, when Shenzhen only managed to achieve five victories in 30 league games and was relegated³ to the second division for the first time under his supervision⁴.

　　A week ago, at his first match in the second division, Troussier changed seven of the starting 11 lineups compared to last season.

　　"No, no, no," Troussier responded to a reporter who said the team was too young to defend their backyard.

　　If there is something more famous than his coaching, that will be his temper.

　　"Troussier is special not only because he has a marvelous coaching ability, but his bad temper," said Japanese legend Saburo Kawabuchi earlier in a football forum⁵.

　　"It's better for Troussier not to stay in a team for a long time, only if you want to make your club boiling with disputes," he added.

　　Last year, Troussier has clashed with club manager Yu Huaiying, the former vice-chairman of Premier⁶ League club Birmingham City. Yu then established a new club which is now competing in the third division of Chinese league.

　　Yu is among many who keep challenging the Frenchman in and outside the stadium.

　　"The Frenchman put all the old players on the second team and a bunch of youngsters who hadn't even played the second division - it would be absurd if the team could play well with such an arrangement," said Jian Mangen, president of the Shenzhen Fans Union.

　　"I came to Shenzhen to change the mentality⁷, and there were 26 players who never played in the Super League before - my mission is not for a one year-contract, my mission is to change this club," said Troussier when he took charge of the Shenzhen team last year.

　　And now he believe his job will be more significant after the team relegated to the second division.

　　"As a coach, you should make a difference to your team, so I make changes. In lower division, I can teach more specifically, so I will make greater change to the team. For example, tomorrow I will teach the players how to make a good cross to the centre."

　　However, there is something the Frenchman seems never likely to change.

　　"The season is long, we will fight match by match. We will finally find the best of us, forget today and restart tomorrow," he saluted⁸.
