WASHINGTON, Sept. 20 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama is to meet with Palestinian, Nigerian and Lebanese leaders on the sidelines of the United Nations General Assembly next week, and will focus his address to the General Assembly on the Middle East, the White House said Friday.
White House Deputy National Security Advisor1 for Strategic Communications Ben Rhodes said Obama will talk in New York on Tuesday with Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas on the recently relaunched peace talks between the Palestinians and the Israelis.
Obama will meet with Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan on Monday and with Lebanese President Michel Suleiman separately on Tuesday to discuss the influx2 of Syrian refugees to Lebanon, Rhodes said in a preview of Obama's UN trip.
The U.S. president is to focus his address to the General Assembly on the Middle East and North Africa, laying out the U.S. approach and policy forward, Rhodes said.
Obama will also urge the international society to stand strongly against the use of chemical weapons, calling on the Security Council to adopt a resolution on Syrian chemical weapons.
The White House also said Obama will talk about the Middle East peace process and the Iran nuclear issue, adding that he will urge a peaceful resolution to the nuclear issue through diplomacy3.
Rhodes said the administration believes there is a window of opportunity to resolve the Iranian nuclear issue diplomatically, but warned that recent willingness displayed by Iranian President Hassan Rouhani is not enough.
Earlier in the day, Josh Earnest, deputy White House spokesman, said U.S. officials "have had a number of engagements with the Iranians and we'll continue to have conversations on the basis of mutual4 respect."
"Over the course of those conversations, there will be an opportunity for the Iranians to demonstrate through actions the seriousness with which they are pursuing this endeavor," Earnest told reporters aboard Air Force One, as they accompanied Obama to an event in Kansas City, Missouri, according to a White House transcript5.
