奥巴马祝贺禁化武组织赢得诺贝尔和平奖
WASHINGTON, Oct. 11 (Xinhua) -- U.S. President Barack Obama congratulated the Organization for the Prohibition1 of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) on being awarded the Nobel Peace Prize, the White House said Friday.
In a statement released by the White House, spokesman Jay Carney said that the United States strongly supports the OPCW, including its joint2 work with the United Nations, to ensure that chemical weapons stockpiles in Syria are placed under international control and ultimately destroyed.
He also called on all nations to work to bring an end to the conflict in Syria, and to support the OPCW's efforts to end chemical weapons in the world.
The OPCW has been awarded the 2013 Nobel peace prize on Friday "for its extensive efforts to eliminate chemical weapons."
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry also congratulated OPCW on the award earlier in the day, saying that the OPCW has taken " extraordinary steps" and worked with "unprecedented3 speed" to eliminate chemical weapons in Syria.
The U.S. accused Syria of using chemical weapons in the Aug. 21 attack in the suburbs of Damascus, the capital of Syria, which, the White House claimed, killed more than 1,400 people. The Syrian government has denied this accusation4.
Carney said the award "reinforces the international community's commitment to the international prohibition against the use of chemical weapons," and strengthens the trust and confidence the world has placed in the OPCW.
He also said that the OPCW has stood at the forefront of the international community's efforts to verifiably eliminate chemical weapons since its establishment 16 years ago.
