In one sense,we can trace all the problems of the American city back to a single starting point--we Americans don't like our cities very much.That is,on the face of it,absurd.After all,more than 3/4 of us now live in cities,and more are flocking to them every year.We are told that the problems of our cities are receiving more attention in Washington.And scholarship has discovered a whole new field in the urban studies.None nor less,it is historically true in the American psycology that city has been a basically suspect institution filled with the corruption¹ of Europe.Totally liking² that scents³ of spaciousness⁴ and innocents of the frontier and the rural landscape.
