UNIT NINE
   Part One

Warm Up

Dialogue 1
  B鼓动A参加学校的音乐试唱,A对自己一直信心不足,特别是当她听说全校最好的歌手也来参加比赛时,她绝望了…

A: I can’t believe you ⑴talk me into ⑵auditioning for the school musical. When I get this nervous, I can’t ⑶carry a tune2. Look at me, I am getting cold feet.
B: Try to *get a hold of yourself.
A: ⑷You got the point. It’s just that every time I audition1 for anything, I feel totally exhausted3 when it’s all over. I just want them to give me ⑸a fair shake. That’s all I ask.
B: Hey, there’s Nancy. She’s the best singer in the entire school. I didn’t know she was going to audition for the same part as you.
A: ⑹That’s all I can tolerate! I’m leaving. I don’t have any chance of succeeding.

Dialogue 2
  A是利用晚上时间打工的学生。现在他的诗歌课程和他的打工时间发生冲突,B帮他想出了一个两全之策…

A: I’ve got a big problem with the poetry course that’s required for my major.
B: ⑴Is that all filled up?
A: No, ⑵there’s plenty of room, but there is a prerequisite4. I’ve got to take an introduction to poetry before I can take the special course in poets of the 1960’s and the introductory course is only offered in the evenings.
B: ⑶You don’t like evening classes?
A: *No, that’s not the point. I work in the ⑷cafeteria every evening. I need the money to pay my tuition5.
B: Can you ask someone that works to switch hours with you. Maybe you could just switch a couple of evenings since the course probably only meets two times a week.
A: I wish I could. My boss just did me a favor by putting me on evenings. And He’ll *hit the ceiling if I ask to change again.
B: Wait a minute. I got an idea. Did you check the courses over at the ⑸community college?
A: ⑹Bingo! Thanks for the advice, Linda.
B: *What a friend for?
Dialogue 3
这是发生在购物中心的一段对话…

George: ⑴Who belongs to this fish?
Joe: Oh, it’s mine. Could you ⑵give me a hand with these used books?
Kathleen: And this is her best friend Tracy whose real name is Anastasia and the next book Betsy and Casey become friends with Tib whose real name, I’m sorry to tell you, is Thelma.
George: The ⑶illustrations are hand ⑷tipped.
Joe: And *that’s why it costs so much?
George: No, no. That’s why it’s worth so much.
Joe: I’ll think about it.
Kathleen: I think that’s an awful lot for your dad to buy at one time.
Annabel: Oh, my dad gets me all the books I want.
Kathleen: Well, that’s very nice of him.
Annabel: That’s not my dad. That’s my ⑸nephew.

Part Two

Everyday Expression

Small Talk 1:
Catherine: Mike, I owe you an apology. I’m so sorry that I couldn’t make it yesterday.
Mike: You should have told me when you realized you wouldn’t be available.
Catherine: I swear I wanted to give you a ring but, well, someone came to me and began to talk this and that and this kind of blew it.
Mike: So it must be Joe, right?
Catherine: Yes
Mike: Thank you anyway for telling me the truth. I think it’s ok.

Small Talk 2:
A: Yes, I’m the manager of the store. What can I do for you?
B: OK. I bought this wafer this morning and it turned out rotten.
A: I’m terribly sorry, Madam, this is the last thing that could happen to our customer.
  I’ll immediately give you a refund6.
B: Well, actually, it’s all right.

Small Talk 3:
A: You know what, people tend to watch a beauty like you when they walk on the street.
B: Shall I take that as a compliment7?
A: Yeah, pretty women are always popular, though some think they are no more than t&a.
B: I’m sorry?
A: Oh, sorry, I didn’t mean it and that of course does not include you.
B: Watch your tongue, man.

Small Talk 4:
A: Here we go again. What’s the point of talking about it?
B: Come on, Tina, I think this is so important.
A: It’s only important to you, not me. I think it’s getting meaningless.
B: I never though you would be so impatient.

Small Talk 5:
A: How clumsy of me to step on your foot!
B: Oh, not a bit of it.
A: But I really feel bad about it.
B: Please don’t take it too hard.
