The latest Newspoll shows the Federal Coalition¹ leads Labor² in the primary vote for the first time since the election. The poll in the Australian newspaper shows the Coalition’s primary vote at 41 percent to Labor’s 40 percent. When parliament resumes today, the Opposition³ Leader Tony Abbott will release his plans to tackle climate change.

 

The US President Barack Obama’s set to make his first visit to Australia in March. He’s expected to discuss issues such as climate change and the economic recovery with Prime Minister Kevin Rudd. President Obama has just unveiled his budget for the coming financial year, aimed at creating millions of new jobs and eliminating waste. The administration plans to stimulate⁴ the economy by big increases in spending of more than five percent this year and a further three percent in 2011.

 

In Iraq, a female suicide bomber⁵ has blown herself up among a group of Shiite pilgrims, killing⁶ more than 40 people. The attack happened on the outskirts⁷ of Baghdad and injured more than 100 others.

 

And the Reserve Bank’s tipped to increase interest rates by 25 basis points when it meets today. It would be the fourth official rise in as many meetings.
