Oil giant BP has suffered another difficult day with shares plunging¹ almost 7 percent on the London markets. The drop wiped out more than eight million dollars of value with the company.

Prime Minister Kevin Rudd will today try to sell his proposed super profits tax to a key mining city in Queensland. Mr. Rudd is expected to promise around two billion dollars for building projects in mining centres. Two days of negotiations² with miners in Perth have achieved little.

Ten Indonesian men charged with people smuggling³ will appear in a Brisbane court this morning. Yesterday, the group was moved from an interstate detention⁴ centre to the Brisbane watch-house. The ABC understands 40 more people smugglers from interstate detention centres are being transferred to Brisbane for court appearances.

A UN war crime tribunal has sentenced two Bosnian Serbs to life in prison for genocide for their role in the 1995 Srebrenica massacre⁵. The men were army chiefs in the Bosnian Serb army which was blamed for the massacre of more than 7,000 Muslims. Four other officers and a police official were also jailed for war crimes and crimes against humanity.

And Australia has officially pulled out of the running to host the 2018 Soccer World Cup. Instead, it will concentrate now on bidding for the 2022 event. This leaves the door open for a European nation to host the game in 2018.
