 And the Foreign Minister Kevin Rudd says the United States is to blame for the release of 250,000 secret diplomatic cables. WikiLeaks founder¹ Julian Assange is causing angst for governments around the world with the release of the secret files. Mr Assange is in custody² in Britain on Swedish sexual assault charges. Mr Rudd says Mr Assange cannot be held personally responsible for those leaks.

 

And the latest WikiLeaks documents reveal that Senator Mark Arbib was a secret source for the United States embassy in Canberra. The documents released to Fairfax newspapers show that Senator Arbib provided information to the US about the Government and the workings of the ALP.

 

Heavy rain continued in New South Wales overnight, causing flash flooding in some areas. The SES says it received over 60 calls from residents in Wagga Wagga. Flood warnings were in place for rivers across much of Victoria.

 

Fire has swept through a prison in Chile's capital Santiago, killing³ more than 80 people. Reports say the blaze broke out during a fight between rival gangs who set mattresses⁴ on fire. Eighty-three people are confirmed dead and another 20 are injured. Most of the victims are understood to be inmates⁵.

 

And the Federal Government will fund nicotine⁶ patches through the Pharmaceutical⁷ Benefits Scheme. From February next year, concession⁸ card holders⁹ will be able to access subsidised patches. The Health Minister Nicola Roxon says she expects that the decision will help tens of thousands of people to quit smoking.
