The Federal Government is about to do a deal with Papua New Guinea to reopen the Manus Island Detention1 Centre. Australian authorities have already toured the site and PNG’s cabinet is likely to sign up on the deal today. The centre had been part of the Howard government’s so-called “Pacific Solution” that Labor3 had promised not to revisit.

A Senate inquiry7 into bank competition will release its report today. The inquiry was set up in October after the Government unveiled its banking8 reform package. The big banks, smaller lenders and regulators all gave evidence. The Australian Bankers’ Association says there’s already enough competition in the banking sector9.
