 The Federal Government’s asylum-seeker deal with Malaysia will be challenged in the High Court. Refugee advocates have lodged¹ papers on behalf of a Kurdish woman and her son who arrived by boat after the deal was announced. The woman’s husband has already been granted refugee status and lawyers say that separating the family breaches² Australian and international laws. 

 

The search has now begun for a new police commissioner³ in Victoria. Simon Overland resigned from the top job yesterday after an ombudsman’s report found that he approved the release of misleading crime figures in the lead-up to last year’s state election. The decision follows months of controversy⁴ over his leadership. 

 

Ayman al-Zawahiri is vowing⁵ to continue the holy war against the United States and its allies after being named al-Qaeda’s new leader. The announcement was made in a statement on an Islamist website. Al-Zawahiri was the long-time deputy of Osama Bin⁶ Laden⁷ who was killed by US forces in Pakistan last month. 

 

A suicide bomber⁸ has attacked the police headquarters in Nigeria’s capital Abuja. At least two people are dead and several others are injured. The car bomb exploded in the building’s car park. Nigerian police believe it’s the work of Islamist group Boko Haram.

 

And Greece’s debt crisis and political turmoil⁹ are threatening to spark another global economic meltdown. World markets fell for a second day as Greek Prime Minister George Papandreou struggles to form a new government. His tough new austerity measures have prompted a string of parliamentary resignations and violent protests.
