 There’s been an outpouring of grief on the streets of Pyongyang to the news of the death of North Korea's leader Kim Jong-il. World leaders have reacted cautiously to his death and the country's neighbours remain on alert. There's widespread uncertainty¹ about his son Kim Jong-un, who's been anointed as his successor. 

 

Another 13 survivors² have been found from the asylum³ seeker boat that capsized off Indonesia at the weekend. The 12 men and one woman were picked up from the island of Nusa Barung. That brings the total number of survivors to 46. More than 100 people are still missing. 

 

Papua New Guinea's leadership crisis is closer to being resolved. The country's Governor-General Sir Michael Ogio has now recognised Peter O'Neil as the legitimate⁴ prime minister. Mr O'Neil also has the support of PNG's public service, its police and defence forces. 

 

Up to 100 homes in the northern Victorian town of Wangaratta have been evacuated⁵ because of a chemical spill. People living within a 300-meter radius⁶ of the factory where the spill happened were told to leave their homes. Authorities say most of the chemical cloud has now dissipated, but residents have been advised to stay indoors. 

 

And online shoppers have been warned this Christmas about an increase in the theft of credit card details. A University of Canberra report has found that cyber criminals are increasingly targeting mobile devices with destructive software. It found there has been a 200 percentage rise in the practice over the past year.
