 Anti-American protests are spreading across the Middle East and North Africa. They've been sparked by anger over a US-made film denigrating¹ Islam. Four people have died in Yemen where protesters briefly² stormed the grounds of the American embassy. Demonstrators also clashed with security forces outside embassies in Egypt and Tunisia.

 

 

 

The first group of asylum³ seekers is due to arrive in Nauru late this morning. A charter plane left Christmas Island last night with passengers believed to be from Sri Lanka. They'll be housed in the tent city until permanent facilities for up to 1,500 asylum seekers are completed.

 

 

 

The federal government has agreed to give more indigenous⁴ students the chance to study at university. The increase is one of a series of recommendations in a review of indigenous higher education.

And environmental groups say they are relieved the super trawler will be prevented from fishing in Australia for up to two years. The Lower House voted in favour of the legislation last night. It now goes on to the Senate where it is expected to pass with the support of the Greens.

 

 

 

And a memorial service for Neil Armstrong has described him as a humble⁵ hero who led mankind into space. The first person who walked on the moon died last month at the age of 82. Fellow astronauts Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins took part in the ceremony at Washington's National Cathedral.
