 Leading the news this morning.Strong winds overnight have hampered¹ back-burning efforts in the Blue Mountains. Fire crews are trying to stop two large fires merging² into one massive front. Their efforts were hampered overnight when they have to divert to protect homes from ember attack. Police have now charged two boys aged³ 11 and 15 over a large fire in Newcastle. 

 

The ACT government is set to make Australian history today by passing a bill to legalize same-sex marriage. But the victory for gay rights might be short-lived. The Federal Government is planning to challenge these laws in the high court. 

 

A student's opened fire at a school in Nevada in the United States, killing⁴ a staff member before taking his own life. Two students were also wounded in the early morning shooting and they are in a critical condition.

 

The French Foreign Ministry⁵ has summoned the US ambassador over spying claims. The French newspaper Le Monde has published leaked information from fugitive⁶ intelligence analyst⁷ Edward Snowden, claiming the US secretly recorded millions of phone calls in France. The documents show more than 70 million calls were tapped between December and January. 

 

A bomb has ripped through a bus in southern Russia, killing at least five people and wounding 20. The bus in the city of Volgograd was packed with students at the time. Russian investigators⁸ believe a female suicide bomber⁹ was responsible for the attack. Identity documents belonging to the suspect were found near the scene.
