 Sixty-five Australians are among nearly 350 people arrested after Canadian police smashed a huge international child pornography ring based in Toronto. Nearly 400 children around the world have been rescued and an online tip-off from a website in Canada played a critical role in uncovering this ring. 

 

The army has sacked six members involved in a sex scandal. They are part of a group known as the knights¹ of the Jedi Council who emailed demeaning sexual videos of women. 

 

Queensland health authorities are warning there could be more cases of salmonella poisoning linked to a fatal outbreak in Brisbane. A 77-year-old woman has died and more than 200 other people have fallen ill. The outbreak is linked to a catering² company that provided food to up to 40 Melbourne cup functions in Brisbane last week. 

 

The New South Wales Director of Public Prosecutions³ will appeal against the sentence given to the man who killed a Sydney teenager Thomas Kelly. Kieran Loveridge was jailed last week for a minimum of four years. Thomas Kelly died after he was king-hit by Loveridge during a night out in Kings Cross last year. 

 

And Federal Parliament has less than a fortnight to resolve that standoff over the debt ceiling. Treasurer⁴ Joe Hockey has warned of massive spending cuts if the dispute is not resolved. The government wants to lift the debt ceiling to 500 billion dollars. But Labor⁵ and the Greens want it kept at 400 billion dollars.
