 Indonesia has recalled its ambassador and it's also reviewing all co-operation with the Australian government over the latest spying revelations. Documents obtained by the ABC show attempts were made to listen to the phone conversations of Indonesia's president and those close to him. Indonesia's Foreign Minister Marty Natalegawa says that is unacceptable. 

 

Australian Greenpeace activist¹ Colin Russell has been told he must stay in a Russian prison for a further three months while awaiting trial. The Tasmanian is one of 30 activists² arrested for protesting against Arctic oil drilling in September. 

 

Powerful tornadoes³ have carved a trail of destruction across America's midwest. At least six people have been killed in the state of Illinois and it's feared hundreds may have been injured. Entire neighbourhoods have been demolished⁴. 

 

And French police are hunting a lone⁵ gunman on the loose in central Paris. The gunman opened fire at the offices of a left wing newspaper, injuring one person before fleeing. About 90 minutes later, shots were fired at a major bank, but no one was injured. A car was then hijacked⁶ and the attacker forced the driver to drop him on the Champs-Elysees where he disappeared into the crowd. 

 

And finally a complex and risky⁷ operation has begun at the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant. Japanese workers are removing 1500 radioactive fuel rods from one of four reactors⁸. The entire process is expected to take more than a year.
