 Australia has won its bid to stop Japan from hunting whales in the Southern Ocean. The International Court of Justice has ruled that the whaling program is not for scientific purposes. Japan says it's disappointed, but it will abide¹ by the ruling.

 

Australian journalist Peter Greste has again been denied bail² by an Egyptian court. It was his fourth appearance since he was jailed more than three months ago on charges of spreading false news and supporting a terrorist organisation³.  For the first time, Mr. Greste and his two Al Jazeera colleagues were allowed to address the judge directly.

 

Australia authorities have confirmed that four orange objects spotted⁴ by the air force on Sunday are not debris⁵ from the missing Malaysian plane. An Australian navy ship fitted with a black box detector⁶ is on its way to the search area. Malaysia's Prime Minister will visit Perth tomorrow to thank those involved in the search.

 

Brisbane police say they have a positive breakthrough in their efforts to identify a young woman murdered last week. The woman's body was found in a park in south Brisbane on Friday. Police say the woman may have been a foreign student or a backpacker.

 

Tasmania has a new opposition⁷ leader. Labor's former deputy Bryan Green has been elected unanimously to the top job. Former premier⁸ Lara Giddings had wanted to stay on as leader, but she didn't have the backing of her caucus⁹ colleagues.
