 An Israeli air strike near another UN-run school in Gaza has killed at least 10 people. The UN Secretary General Ban Ki-moon has strongly condemned¹ the attack, calling it a moral outrage² and a criminal act. The blast hit the entrance of the school in Rafa, where thousands of Palestinians were taking shelter. 

 

The French and German presidents have led a ceremony to commemorate³ the 100th anniversary of Germany's declaration of war on France. It's the beginning of a series of events to mark the centenary of WWI. A service will be held at the National War Memorial in Canberra this afternoon. 

 

An online fund-raising site to help Baby Gamy has exceeded its goal of raising 200,000 dollars. The plight⁴ of the Down Syndrome⁵ baby born to a surrogate mother and left behind in Thailand by an Australian couple has prompted international outrage. 

 

A massive rescue operation is underway in China after an earthquake killed more than 360 people. Hundreds of others were injured when the Magnitude 6.1 quake struck Yunnan Province in the country's southwest. Thousands of buildings have collapsed⁶. 

 

And police are investigating how a young boy in the central west of New South Wales sustained serious injuries. The three-year-old was found unconscious and not breathing at a house in Oberon late yesterday. He was flown to a Sydney hospital and remains⁷ in a critical condition.
