Louis worked all the last week of September for the Swan Boat man in the Boston Public Garden.

路易斯在九月的最后一周里一直在为波士顿大众公园的天鹅游艇老板工作。

He was a great success and was becoming famous.

他大获成功，声名日显。

On Saturday, the Boatman paid him a hundred dollars in cash, which Louis placed carefully in his moneybag.

星期六，游艇老板付了他一百美元的现金，路易斯把这钱小心地放到了他的钱袋里。

The Boatman, after paying the first night's bill at the Ritz Carlton Hotel,游艇老板在付了里兹·卡尔顿饭店第一夜的帐单后，decided to let Louis sleep on the lake instead of in the hotel, and this suited Louis better.

决定以后还是让路易斯睡到湖上而不是饭店里，因为湖上对路易斯更适合些。

He slept with the ducks and geese on the lake, floating gracefully¹ on the surface of the water, his head tucked² under his wing.

他与鸭子和鹅一起睡在湖上，高雅地浮在水面，把他的头扎到翅膀下面。

Louis took good care of his trumpet³. He kept it polished, and once a week he cleaned the spit out of it.

路易斯细心地保养着他的小号。他让它时刻保持光洁，每过一周还要清洗一遍里面的口水。

He learned new songs whenever he could, by listening to people's radios and by attending concerts.

只要有机会，他就去听人们的收音机，或者去听音乐会，从那里面学习新歌。

Whenever he played it, he thought of Serena, and always, when he finished it, the passengers on the Swan Boat clapped loudly and cheered.

无论何时，只要他一吹起这首歌，就会想起塞蕾娜，每到吹完的时候，天鹅游艇上的乘客们总是大声地鼓掌喝彩。

Louis liked applause⁴. It made him feel lighthearted and gay.

路易斯喜欢听掌声。这让他感到愉快和开心。

Sometimes, at the end of the afternoon, Louis played "Now the Day Is Over."有时，在下午快结束的时候，路易斯会吹起“现在白天已经过去”这首歌。

He made it sound sweet and sad.

他把歌曲吹得甜蜜而又忧伤。

One afternoon, when he was leading the last trip of the day, he played the "Cradle⁵ Song" by Brahms.

一天下午，他在给最后一班游艇导航时，吹起了勃拉姆斯的“摇篮曲”。

The passengers sang the words.
