 Natural gas could be used for energy. One of the ways that companies get it is called hydraulic¹ fracturing or fracking. It's one engineer's use water and chemicals to crack open rocks deep underground. And that will release those natural gases. There is debate heppening in Youngs town, Ohio. It's not about fracking itself. It's about what happens to the chemicals and waters afterward². And it's lauched a scientific investigation³. Puppie Hullow has these details on this for us.

 

Youngs town residents are demanding answers about why their houses shcoked on New Year's Eve. "I have never heard an earthquake in my whole life." "It was frightening.""I thought airplane crashed at the site of my house." 

 

It was the biggest 11th earthquake here since mid-March. And get this, scientists tell us they think they are man made. 

 

"This is the New Year's Eve earthquake." Seismologist John Brosters says the 4.0 quake was likely triggered by this disposal well which injects waste waters from fracking and oiling gas drilling and intense pressure, nearly 9200 feet underground. "Injecting this much waste is disrupting mother nature and mother nature, in this one case, is biting back."

 

The company D&L Energy says, "Proximity⁴ alone does not prove causation." Ohio // helped figure out what's causing all the year's quakes. "You only need one desk." 

 

Enclosed 5 nearby disposal wells, indefinitely. "It's possible that there is induced seismo activity so that's one possiblity." "Man made earthquakes?" "Correct, but we don't have conclusive⁵ prove yet." There are more than 170 of these wells across Ohio. "We wanted to understand how these processes really work. So we are getting a real look at these massive waste tanks and then how it was all injected deep into the earth." "track some loads into the 2 tanks. And then it goes through the filter and injected into the down hole. we are putting exactly where the federal government says to put." It is mostly sour water, but also a small amount of chemicals from the frack used to break part of the shell. "How much dirllling waste water is being pumped deep into the earth here?" "2000 // a day approximately"

 

"I have lived here for about 42 years, We never had an earthquake like that." A proponent⁶ fracking for the jobs it brings to this depressed⁷ economy. Youngs town's mayor now is worried. "If you feel unsafe in your own house, then it is a serious situation. The fracking boom is causing huge demand for more disposal well permanents. Stade Bob Hagen is calling for more terrain⁸ on all injection wells in Ohio. "It was stopped at the development of the best economic opportunity. This area is represented. The staff in the past 2 decades to stay in Ohio."

 

Scientists hope they are little closer to solve a historic marine⁹ time mystery. This is the remains¹⁰ of the HL Handly. It was a federal submarine from the US civil war. In fact, this is the first sub in history that sick in enemy warship¹¹. But in 1864, the Hamly sank 2 but nobody knows why. It was pulled out of the water about 12 years ago. The trust that pulled it out was removed for the first time last week. One researcher said they are being able to see the Handlly without the trust is like looking at the sub for the first time. He is hoping this new view will lead to some new clues about what happened to this ship.
