 First up today, a tribute, yesterday was the first anniversary of terrorist attack in the Boston Marathon. Three people died in the bombings. Scores were injured. Police say an official was killed later by the bombing suspect. But the city soldiers are on. From a moment of silence, the raisers finish in line. The sound of church bell is ringing and they are raising the American flag. The ceremony in body the slogan “Boston, Strong!” Thousands of people gathered in the ring, from first responders and vice¹ president, turnarounds and injured victim. One man who had shrapnel in his legs said last year he was on the ground of the finish line, this year he will be running across it.

 

Is this legit? There is a vaccine² for the Ebola virus. Not legit. There is no known cure or vaccine for Ebola. Avoiding close contact with Ebola patience is crucial. When you need thing about Ebola is that it’s unlike some other virus, people don’t turn to spread it until they actually get sick with it. So it’s only when they are feverish³ they are contagious⁴. Once they are, it spreads very easily and kills more than half of those who get it. It’s never infective of humans in the US. But for scientists researching in trying to stop the Ebola spread in Guinea, taking extreme precautions is just part of the job.

 

A simple blue box, potentially carrying one of the most dangerous passengers in the world, is on its way to be tested. In less than four hours, we’ll find out whether it contains the Ebola virus. The feed of three patients depends on what’s inside. Simply getting the blood samples is a life-threaten job. One of these works told us he has a nine-month old baby at home. They will do everything they can to protect themselves. Three pairs of gloves and booties and layer after layer of gowns. They go in to see the patients, every single inch of their bodies covered. Impermeable⁵ shoots. Nothing in, nothing out. They say even a drop of the Ebola virus that gets into a break of your skin can infect you. And we all have breaks in the skin. This is a painstaking⁶ detail and process you have to go through to be able to interact with patients with Ebola. This is as close as we can get. They decontaminate themselves. They have taken the blood samples and put them in this blue ice chest over here and it’s highly suspicious that contains Ebola. WHO virus technicians see them next.

 

They ‘ve just been hand-delivered the blue boxes. Now its their job to test the sample for the deadly virus. They are going to have the results just two hours from now. But a few years ago, being able to test for Ebola on its own stuff was impossible. Precious blood samples had to be taken out and moved forward to areas in central Africa and flown to CTC in Atlanta or WHO in Geneva. Pilot also sometimes refuses to fly the dangerous passengers. And even they have died it could take days or weeks to get the results. 8:00pm, we get the call. So, Two of the three patients now have confirmed Ebola.
