The greatest moment of the race is not the touching¹ of the wall, or when one swimmer begins to pull ahead of the pack. The greatest moment takes place before the pistol² even fires, when for a brief time no nation is greater or smaller, stronger or weaker than any other.

The 2004 Athens Games have come to a close. The final night of celebrations marked the end of the return of the Games to the place where the Olympics were born. It also marked the beginning of the countdown to the next Games, to be held in Beijing in 2008.

 

Jacque Rogge (IOC Chairment): These Games were unforgettable, dream Games. And now, in accordance with tradition, I declare the Games of the XXVIII Olympiad closed and I call upon the youth of the world to assemble four years from now in Beijing to celebrate with us there the Games of the XXIX Olympiad.

 

It was a night to celebrate the Olympic spirit, and the Olympic hopes, as they completed the homecoming of the modern Olympics. The closing ceremony was all about having a good time, with a celebration of Greek culture.

 

As the closing ceremony marked the end of this year’s summer Games, it also got the ball rolling for Beijing. The Chinese flag was raised, as the national ¹⁾anthem³ rang out. International Olympic Committee President Jacque Rogue⁴ handed over the Olympic ²⁾baton⁵, and it was time for the Chinese to impress with a preview of what’s to come in four years time. It included a short Beijing Olympics promotional ³⁾clip⁶ directed by Zhang Yimo. Then a young Chinese girl sang a song of welcome to the world on top of a huge red ⁴⁾lantern.

 

Finally a young Greek girl blew out the Olympic flame, officially drawing to a close the 2004 Athens Games. See you in Beijing in 2008.

相约北京

2004年雅典奥运会结束了。最后一晚的庆祝活动标志着奥运会回归诞生地的旅程结束，同时，它也标志着2008年北京奥运会的倒计时开始了。

           

雅克·罗格（国际奥委会主席）：雅典奥运会是一个令人难忘的梦之奥运。现在，根据奥林匹克的传统，我宣布，第28届奥运会闭幕。我在此邀请青年朋友4年后在北京再次相聚，参加第29届奥运会。

 

现代奥运会的回归之旅结束了，这是一个弘扬奥林匹克精神和希望的夜晚。轻松愉快是闭幕式的主旋律，同时也有对希腊文化的赞美。

闭幕式为本届奥运会划上一个句号，也是北京奥运会准备工作的开始。随着国歌响起，中国国旗在闭幕式上升起。国际奥委会主席雅克·罗格把奥运会的会旗交给中国。中国利用这个机会，向世界展示四年后的北京。这次展示是包括张艺谋导演的宣传北京奥运的短片，接着，一名中国小女孩在一个巨大的红灯笼顶上向世界唱起了欢迎之歌。

在闭幕式的最后，一名希腊女孩吹熄了奥运圣火，至此，2004年雅典奥运会正式结束了。我们2008年在北京再见。
