Taylor is nervous about the governor¹'s reception². 泰乐对于州长欢迎晚会觉得很紧张，

She's afraid she won't know what to talk about. 她害怕自己会不晓得该说些什么，

Jim gives her some ideas. 吉姆给了她一些点子。

She can make comments³ about different things to break the ice. 她可以谈论不同事物来打破冷场，

Then she can introduce herself. 然后她可以自我介绍。

Susie told Taylor to talk about the city and humorous⁴ things. 苏希提议泰乐谈论这座城市以及一些幽默的话题，

Susie has lots of ideas. 苏希有很多点子，

Taylor thinks Susie should go to the reception instead! 泰乐认为苏希应该代替她去参加欢迎晚会！

Taylor is really nervous. 泰乐很紧张。

Why? 为什么？

She's going to the governor's reception on April 21. 她在四月二十一日要去参加州长欢迎晚会，

She's afraid she won't know what to say. 她怕自己会不知道要说些什么。

She won't know what to say to the governor? 她不知道该对州长说什么吗？

No, she won't know what to say to other people at the reception. 不是，她不知道该和欢迎晚会上的其他人说些什么。

Oh! So she has to make small talk. 哦！她需要和别人闲聊。

Right. She's nervous about that. 没错，她对这点觉得很紧张。

She can talk about books or movies. 她可以谈论书或电影，

Those are good topics. 这些都是很好的话题。

Hey, Jim. I need help. 嘿，吉姆，我需要帮忙。

I'm worried about the governor's reception. 我很担心州长的欢迎晚会，

What can I talk about? 我可以和别人聊些什么？

I can give you some ideas. 我可以给妳一些点子。

Please do! 麻烦你啰！

Make comments about different things to break the ice. 先谈论各种不同事物来打破冷场，

Then talk about the food or even the room itself. 然后再谈论餐点或甚至是举办欢迎晚会的场所，

Then introduce yourself. 接着再自我介绍。

That's good advice. 这忠告很好。

I can talk about work, too. 我也可以谈论工作，

And maybe tell some funny stories. 也许再讲些好笑的故事。

Those are also good ideas! 这些也都是很好的主意！

What are you doing this weekend? 你这周末要做什么？

I might see a movie. Why? 我可能会去看场电影，为什么这么问？

No reason. 没有为什么，

I'm just making small talk. 我只是在和你闲聊而已。

You must have been talking to Taylor. 妳一定和泰乐谈过。

Uh-huh. I told her she could talk about things to do in the city, sports, something humorous ... 是啊。我对她说她可以谈论在城里能够做的事情，还有体育，以及幽默的事情…

You must be good at small talk. 妳一定很擅长聊天。

That's what Taylor said. 泰乐也这么说，

She said I should go to the reception instead of her! 她说我应该代替她去参加欢迎晚会！
