C: I have a message for you, from Mr Waterhouse. I told him I did not know you and did not expect to see you. He didn't believe me.

V: If it's to invite me for a chat, I don't intend to place myself in the way of his condescension⁴.

C: No, not that. He wants you to know that there are no charges against you.

1 fleeting   

adj.短暂的，飞逝的
