A father and son finally reunited. David Goldman left his hotel just after sunrise this morning in Rio early at the US consulate1 for the transfer he has waited five years to see.
The Brazilian family holding his son Sean delivered him including in that family are the grey, his grandmother and a man who calls himself his stepfather. And what a mob scene it was.
As ordered by the Supreme2 Court of Brazil, nine-year-old Sean was delivered to the US consulate before 9:00 am local time this morning. Greeted by a crash of cameras and reporters and security, the boy was wearing the yellow and green of a Brazilian national soccer jersey3 clearly overwhelmed. He clung to the family lawyer who was with members of the Brazilian family as they made their way in.
For the last five years, Sean Goldman has been living here in Rio de Janeiro. Since his mother died last year, he’s been in the care of his grandmother Silvana Bianchi. We reached her on her cell phone after she had told her grandson about the court’s decision.
-What was his reaction when you told him that he was going to be leaving Brazil and your home?
-He cried and he said I don't want to go.
-What would you like to see happen?
-I would like to help David.
-What would you like to do? I’m not clear.
-I would like to go to States and then stay for a while and …
And that request from a woman, Goldman told us, try to stop him from seeing his own son. Yet he told us over the weekend he will not do as the Brazilian family what they did to him.
-I wouldn’t keep the door locked, I wouldn’t do that. There needs to be a lot of feeling and there needs to be a lot of steps taken. And Sean needs to be in a good place what is, what is emotional fragility after all these years of psychological abuse. That is my first priority.
Meanwhile in Long Branch New Jersey, another one of Sean’s grandparents Barry Goldman is eager to welcome a grandson he hasn’t been able to see for five years.
-What’s the first thing you want to do when you see him?
-Give him a big hug and a kiss, tell him how much I loved him and how much I missed him.
And now, they have left the consulate, father and son, er, made their way to Rio’s international airport. They’re going to take a private jet to New Jersey today. They should arrive back in the US, Sean touching4 US soil for the first time in five years. They should be back in the US by Christmas. Father, of course, having not spent the last five years with him, the boy is going to a new country and going to get acquainted with the father he hardly knows. Elizabeth.
-Jeffrey, the grandmother, the Brazilian grandmother had volunteered to go along on that flight to help ease this transition. Did David Goldman take upon that offer or will just be father and son on this jet?
-You know, I, I saw David Goldman last night just before he went to sleep, and I, I told him about my conversation with the grandmother, and he rolled his eyes and he, he said “I don’t think so”. He said, in time but not now, unless something has changed dramatically in the last hours, so in their private conversations. I think it’s safe to assume that they are going to… the grandmother will not be seeing her grandson until he has acclimatized to his new father, or his father and his new country.
