The IRS admits it's using cell phone tracking equipment, which can collect meta-data, but only in criminal cases.

“The use of that is restricted.

It's our criminal investigation¹ division that uses that technique.”

IRS Commissioner² John Koskinen told a Senate Finance Committee the agency has to get a court order to use tracking technology…

And he stressed, it's used primarily for cases like money laundering³, terrorism, and organized crime.

Koskinen agreed to tell the committee how often the technology is used within 30 days.
