A 2014 breach¹ of Yahoo impacted at least half a billion accounts, potentially putting at risk email addresses, birth dates and other personal information.

Acting² Assistant Attorney General Mary McCord says the Justice Department has charged four people with the cyberattack, including two officers with the Russian federal security service:

(McCord) “And two criminal hackers³ with whom they conspired⁴ to accomplish these intrusions.”

The U.S. has charged foreign nationals with cyberattack before, but this is the first criminal case brought against Russian government officials. It comes amid a separate investigation⁵ of Russian efforts to interfere⁶ with the 2016 election.
