Microsoft says two conservative groups, The Hudson Institute and The International Republican Institute, were targeted. The company says a hacking¹ group tied to the Russian government created fake internet domains² and spoofed the political groups.

This comes just weeks after a similar discovery by Microsoft led Senator Claire McCaskill, a Democrat³ who's running for re-election in Missouri, to reveal that Russian hackers⁴ tried to infiltrate⁵ her Senate computer network.

The hacking attempts are like the ones that came before the 2016 election, but this time, more than helping⁶ one political party over another, Microsoft says it was focused on "disrupting democracy".
