Tim: Whoa, easy tiger! Hey this'll put a smile on your face. Guess who our landlord¹ is?
Alice: How should I know? We give the money to Helen and she always sends off the cheque.
Tim: Go on, guess.
Alice: Tom Cruise², the man in the moon, no idea!
Tim: It's Helen's dad!
Alice: Helen's dad! No way! Why would she keep that a secret?
Helen: I'm just putting the kettle on. Anyone fancy³ a cuppa?

We can use the present simple to talk about habits (things that we do regularly), facts (things that are always true) or states (facts that are true for a long time).

We can use the present continuous⁴ to talk about an activity that's happening now, (or around now) or to talk about planned future arrangements.

Present simple（现在简单式）

Habits:

We give Helen the rent every month.
She sends the cheque to the landlord.

Facts:

The sun rises in the east.
Brasilia is the capital of Brazil.

States:

They live in a flat together.
Alice doesn't work in a hospital.

Present simple form:（句型）

I/You/We/They go to the office by bike.
He/She/It likes swimming.


Present continuous（现在进行式）

Happening now:

I'm just putting the kettle on.
They're watching TV.

Planned future arrangements:

Helen's studying later tonight.
I'm playing football with my friends on Saturday.

Present continuous form:（句型）

Verb to be +verb + ing

I am waiting for you
You/We/They are studying
He/She/It is chatting



Note: In spoken English we usually shorten⁵ "I am" to "I'm" , "You are" to "You're" etc.

1 landlord   

n.地主，房东，(旅店)店主

• He is the landlord of this pub.他是这家酒店的店主。
• He used to be a long - term labourer for a landlord.他早先给地主扛过长活。

2 cruise   

v.巡航，航游，缓慢巡行；n.海上航游

参考例句：

3 fancy

4 continuous   

adj.继续的，连续的，持续的，延伸的

参考例句：

• She finally got in after 10 years'continuous effort.坚持不懈地努力了十年后，她终于当选了。
• We must be continuous to study.我们必须不断学习。

5 shorten   

vt.弄短，缩小，减少

参考例句：

• Minor accidents can shorten the life of a car.小事故会缩短汽车寿命。
• My dress is too long I must shorten it.我的连衣裙太长了，我得把它截短些。
