(Oh, really?) You just see this inexplicable1 joy on everyone's face. The feeling makes me get chills2 just thinking about it right now. It was awesome3.
I want one.
While most of the families are getting to know their new children, I go with Denny Hawl on a personal journey. We drive to the Nanchang City Park where her daughter Marissa was left nearly 5 years ago.
They, they named her Jade4 Treasure in the park and some of Marissa's favorite things to do are to be outside, to pick up acorns5, she collects leaves, she, she has a collection of seashells. She is a child of nature. And to me she's around there that she was left in the park, she was found in the park and that's so part of who she is, kind of, you know.
And the funny thing is that if I, I brought Marisa back here tomorrow, she would love this park. You know, that's, that's the ironic6 thing. She would just think this is great and it is a nice place and you know, better than abroad just beside the road, or a dry cleaner's or a shoe store. You know, I'd like to think that someone cared enough about her to at least leave her in a beautiful place, in a place where people, you know, are just a lot of people are here. So she will be found.
"When that day comes when you do tell her that you know she was found in a park, in this park, how do you think she'll react?"
"I hope that somehow, she can accept that without doubting her own self-worth, you know, that's, that's my biggest fear."
"So is this what you wanna just put up and let people know she is ok?"
"Yes, I mean, you don't want them, anyone to contact you necessarily."
"Ruibo, would you read that?"
"OK, the, the girl on the picture was found on November 16th, 1999 here in this park, and she was living happily and healthily with her new parents in the United States."
It's kind of weird7 to see little Marissa's face in this little, this park in China? Oh, no...And I gotta wonder in what way she would think of this, I hope it's ok. Little Marissa. Send her message out there to the universe.
Within seconds a crowd starts to gather to look at the poster.
Look at her. She is so pretty and healthy, she will thank you and love you more than her real parents when she grows up.
Where do you come from? From Atlantic Georgia, America.
"I feel very disgraced8 and a loss of face. I know, I think maybe several years later, she will think, she will not feel pride of our country."
"Now I don't know how she will feel, right now she is very proud. She takes Chinese dance, Chinese language, she is very proud."
