US President Barack Obama says he and the secretary-general of NATO have agreed that Afghanistan will be the focus of the organization's 2014 summit.
"We had an opportunity to discuss not only the planning for the next year and a half, but also what kinds of steps we could take post-2014 to continue to ensure that Afghan security forces are effective and can control their own borders, and that NATO members can be assured that Afghanistan will not be used as a base for terrorism in the future."
Most of the international troops in Afghanistan are scheduled to leave by the end of next year.
Secretary-general of NATO Anders Fogh Rasmussen said that that "goal is now in sight".
"We are determinedly1 moving towards our goal: an Afghanistan that can stand on its own feet. But the Afghans will not stand alone. We are prepared for an enduring partnership2 with the Afghan people."
While Obama and Fogh Rasmussen have agreed on the focus of the 2014 summit, the location has yet to be decided3.
Obama says Rasmussen is looking for a country to host it.
Chicago was the host city for NATO's last summit in 2012.
