1. Auditions¹ for “American Idol²” scheduled in Memphis have been canceled. Producers cited the extensive Hurricane Katrina relief efforts being coordinated³ in the city. Fox television said the auditions planed at the Fed Ex Forum⁴ won't be rescheduled so the city "can focus public safety efforts on the victims."

2. Hilary Duff has pledged to donate $250, 000 to help Katrina victims on the Gulf⁵ Coast. The 17-year-old singer actress will give $200,000 to the American Red Cross and $50,000 to USA Harvest which is supplying food to shelters.

3. And Ang Lee premiered his new film "Brokeback Mountain" at the Venice Film Festival. The Taiwanese-born director of "Crouching⁶ Tiger, Hidden Dragon" has jumped into yet another genre⁷ with this film. It's an American Western, but this is no classic cowboy tale.
