A cease-fire between Israel and Hamas meant to last at least 3 days and end nearly a month of fighting went into effect in the Gaza Strip. The truce¹ came ahead of talks in Cairo aimed at brokering² a deal that would prevent future cross-border violence.

A special plane left Liberia in the early hours of Tuesday morning to evacuate³ the second American missionary⁴ who fell ill with Ebola. Nancy Writebol is expected to arrive in Atlanta later on Tuesday where she will be treated at a special isolation⁵ ward⁶.

Japan has formally approved additional sanctions against Russia over the unrest in Ukraine. Sanctions include the freezing of assets held in Japan by 40 individuals in 2 groups supporting the separation of Crimea from Ukraine and a ban on Crimean imports.

Surgeons at Houston Methodist Hospital are using "Plato's Cave" to create virtual patients using 3, 4 and even 5D imaging. The images can be downloaded on iPads or smartphones and are being used in the operating room during surgery.
