Reliably republican Alabama has elected democrat¹ Doug Jones to be its new US senator. He won a narrow victory over republican Roy Moore, who is refusing to concede.

The Bangladeshi immigrant accused of setting off an explosion near New York's Times Square, is due to appear in federal court Wednsday. A prosecutor² says Akayed Ullah made it clear, he was on a mission for the Islamic State group.

Authorities say an illegal cooking fire in a homeless camp sparked the flames that destroyed six homes, in an exclusive section of Los Angeles last week. No arrests have been made.

And a female manatee³ has been released back into the waters off Florida, after months of rehabilitation⁴. The manatee, named Naboo, needed medical treatment after a boat hit her.
