A Chinese spacecraft made the first-ever landing on the far side of the moon. China's state broadcaster announced the landing. A picture from the lunar explorer shows a small crater¹ on a barren surface.

Democrats² take majority control of the House when Congress convenes³ on Thursday. There is no sign of the partial government shutdown ending with the two parties refusing to budge⁴ over a border wall.

A man accused of murdering a California police officer appeared in court, but did not enter a plea. Guistavo Perez Arriaga is also accused of living in the US illegally. The case is suspended until he gets some mental evaluation⁵.

A Greyhound bus overturned on an interstate entry ramp⁶ in Jackson, Mississippi. 22 people were taken into hospitals, but there were no serious injuries.
