 Hurry up, men! called the captain. 兄弟们，快点儿！队长叫道，

"We mustn't let the Americans come upon us by surprise! Now get all the food you can find, and let us be off." 别让美国人偷袭了我们！现在带上所有能够找到的食物快走。

It is hard, Jack¹, said his mother, as they heard these words, "to see all our food taken in this way. 杰克，听到这些话妈妈说，看着我们的食物这样被带走，心里真的好难受。

I don't like to feed the British when our own soldiers are hungry." 我不想在我们自己的士兵挨饿的时候喂饱英国人。

I'm glad that I got Old Bay out of sight, anyway, said Jack, as he watched the soldiers.  不管怎么说，我很高兴我把枣红老马带出去了。杰克一边看着士兵，一边说道。

From his place on the porch² Jack could see the barn³, the long row of beehives near it, and the bushes where Old Bay was hidden. 从杰克所在的门廊的地方，他可以看到谷仓和它旁边的一排长长的蜂箱，还有枣红老马藏身的灌木从。

Far beyond stretched a long country road.  更远处则是长长的乡村道路。

Jack's sharp eyes saw all these things, and they saw something else, too! Horsemen! Far down the road, horsemen were coming. 杰克敏锐的眼睛捕捉到了这一切，他们也看到了一些别的东西！是骑兵！在远处的道路上，骑兵赶了过来。

And they were not British this time. American soldiers were coming! 这次不是英国的骑兵。美国人自己的士兵来了！

Oh! if they could only get to the farm in time to catch the British!  啊！要是他们能及时来到农场抓住这些英国人就好了！

But some of the British soldiers had eyes as sharp as Jack's. 但是，有些英国士兵的眼睛和杰克的眼睛一样敏锐。

Up went a shout, "The Americans! The Americans are coming!" 突然有人喊道：美国人！美国人来了！

Jack's Daring⁴ Plan 杰克的大胆计划

Suddenly a clever plan came into Jack's mind. 突然，杰克脑海里浮现出一个机智的计划。

"Run into the house, Mother, "he whispered. "Quick! Quick!" 他低声说道：妈妈，跑进屋里去。快点！快点！

Without stopping to tell what his plan was, the boy jumped from the porch and ran toward⁵ the long row of beehives.  他不等向母亲细说自己的计划，便从门廊里跳下来，跑向那一长排蜂箱。

 

1 jack
