“You might let me alone a minute, Josie Dawn,” he growled1 one night. “A fellow’s got to do something in this world except play ball every minute.”
“I won’t let you alone until the game is over. If I can’t play, my brother has to play well enough to make up for it.”
It was now Friday evening. The game was set for nine-thirty the following morning. The team had their last practice after school, and Joe did not come in until dinner time. Then he refused to eat, and sat hunched2 up in a shivering heap before the fireplace.
“I don’t want any dinner,” he said, when his mother called him to the table. “I’m not hungry.”
“Why, what’s the matter?” asked Josie in great alarm.
“Nothing. I’m just cold and tired. Can’t a fellow rest a minute without everyone thinking something’s the matter?” replied Joe crossly.
