 　　To act with integrity and good faith was such a habit with Susan that she had never before thought of examining the Golden Rule, 为人正直、办事诚实守信是苏珊的习惯。因此，之前她一直没有想到去验证“黄金法则”，

　　All things whatsoever¹ ye would that men should do to you, do ye even so to them. 即无论什么事，你希望别人怎样对待你，你也要怎样对待别人。

　　But the longer she reflected upon it, the stronger was her conviction that she did not always obey the precept²; 但她越是长时间思考这句话，越是笃定地相信她并没有一直遵循这一法则；

　　at length, she appealed to her mother for its meaning. 最后，她去向妈妈请教这句话的含义。

　　"It implies," said her mother, in the first place, a total destruction of all selfishness: for a man who loves himself better than his neighbors, “它意味着，”她妈妈说，首先，彻底摧毁一切自私的心理：如果一个人爱自己比爱邻居更多，

　　can never do to others as he would have others do to him. 他就永远不可能像他期望别人对他那样对待他人。

　　We are bound not only to do, but to feel, toward others as we would have others feel toward us. 我们一定不只是去帮助别人，还要去体会别人的感受，因为别人也会体会我们的感受。

　　Remember, it is much easier to reprove the sin of others than to overcome temptation when it assails³ ourselves. 记住，数落别人的不是总比克服我们自己面对的诱惑容易得多。

　　A man may be perfectly⁴ honest and yet very selfish; but the command implies something more than mere⁵ honesty; it requires charity as well as integrity. 一个人可能非常正直，同时还很自私。但是自我约束意味着比单纯的正直更深层次的东西；它需要人们有仁慈之心，为人诚实。
