Hello everyone, I'm Creshon Saunders at the CNN.com newsroom in Atlanta. Here is a look at what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
Just days now to the next presidential debate and the candidates are both stumping1 and prepping ahead of Tuesday night. Barack Obama took the Democratic campaign trail to Virginia today. Obama touched on health care and hit hard on Republican rival John McCain's tax credit plan for health care. McCain meanwhile is off the campaign trail today. He is at home in Arizona prepping for Tuesday's debate. McCain's advisors2 say he'll ramp3 up his attacks on Obama in the coming days.
The VP candidates are also hitting the campaign trail. Republican nominee4 Governor Sarah Palin has a busy day this afternoon, first a stop in Englewood Colorado to speak on finance, then an evening rally in Carlson California. Democratic nominee Joe Biden took the morning off. Yesterday he spoke5 in Delaware as his son's National Guard Unit was deployed6 to Iraq. Later tonight Biden speaks at the human rights campaign's national dinner in Washington.
President Bush cautioned today the new bailout law will not be a quick fix. He signed a 700-billion-dollar rescue plan soon after it passed the House yesterday. Now the Treasury7 Department must hire financial firms to buy and manage bad mortgage assets.
December 5th, that's the date, that’s sentencing day for O.J. Simpson. A Las Vegas jury has convicted him and a codefendant of kidnapping and robbery. Simpson could go to prison for the rest of his life. The case stemmed from a confrontation8 in a Las Vegas hotel room over a sports memorabilia. Simpson claimed it was his. Simpson's lawyer says he is already working on an appeal.
Kim Jong il reportedly made his first public appearance in more than a month. North Korea's official news agency says the country's leader attended a soccer game in Pyongyang. Unconfirmed reports previously9 said the 66-year-old leader was seriously ill.
Those are the headlines this hour, for more on these stories and other news of the day, CNN is your source online, on TV, even when you're on the go.
