Good afternoon, from the CNN Center in Atlanta, I'm Reggie Aqui. Here is what's happening NOW IN THE NEWS.
The good news is the winds have died down a bit for now but firefighters are still struggling to fight a wild fire in California. The rushing flames have destroyed more than 100 homes and injured at least 13 people in California's Santa Barbara County. It began last evening. Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger has declared a state of emergency as residents have been ordered to evacuate1. More than 500 firefighters are there fighting the blaze.
How does it sound to you? Secretary of State Clinton. Sources close to the Obama campaign say Hillary Clinton has been mentioned as a possible candidate for the post. She met with President-elect Obama yesterday. All eyes were on Clinton today as she made a speech in New York, but if you're looking for confirmation2, well it just didn't happen.
"I'm not going to speculate or address anything about the president-elect's incoming administration and I'm going to respect his process and any inquiry3 should be directed to his transition team."
The holiday shopping season could be a casualty of the shaking economy and rising unemployment. That is a question right now. The Commerce Department reported a 2.8% drop in retail4 sales last month and that decline is the worst since the Commerce Department started measuring retail sales back in 1992.
The weather is looking good for space shuttle Endeavour's launch tonight. The crew is taking up a bathroom, sleeping quarters, and an exercise machine and a new kitchenette to the International Space Station. Scheduled launch time is 7:55 pm Eastern, that is, if the weather is still good at that time.
James Bond is back on the big screen. The new 007 movie hits theaters today. The Daniel Craig is reprising his 007 role for Quantum of Solace5. It's a dangerous job playing Bond. While filming the 22nd film in the long running series, Craig endured 8 stitches, a severed6 fingertip and some bruised7 ribs8. Maybe even a bruised ego9, reviews have not been very good.
