 Despairing of him, therefore, I determined¹ to go to bed and to sleep; and no doubt, before a great while, he would follow me.  我已对他失望了,因此,我决定先上床睡觉;不成问题,再多隔一会,他总会跟着上床。

But previous to turning in, I took my heavy bearskin jacket, and threw it over him, as it promised to be a very cold night;  但是,在上床前,我拿我那件厚重的熊皮外套,丢在他身上,因为那天夜里看来十分冷;

and he had nothing but his ordinary round jacket on. For some time, do all I would, I could not get into the faintest doze².  他只穿着一件普通的外套。有好一阵子,我虽然想方设法,总是连瞌盹都打不上来。

I had blown out the candle; and the mere³ thought of Queequeg-not four feet off-sitting there in that uneasy position, stark⁴ alone in the cold and dark;  我已吹熄了烛火,但只要一想到魁魁格...相距不及四英尺...那么不舒服地坐在那里,孤零零的坐在又冷又黑的房间里,

this made me really wretched.  就着实使我很是难受。

Think of it; sleeping all night in the same room with a wide awake pagan on his hams in this dreary⁵, unaccountable Ramadan! 你想一想;通夜跟一个盘着腿在做他那怕人的。莫名其妙的斋戒而又不想睡觉的异教徒睡在同一个房间里!

But somehow I dropped off at last, and knew nothing more till break of day; when, looking over the bedside, there squatted⁶ Queequeg, as if he had been screwed down to the floor. 但是,我最后总算蒙蒙地睡着了,一觉睡到天亮,万事不知;可是,当我往床外一望,魁魁格还蹲在那里,仿佛他已让螺丝钉给钉在地板上了。

But as soon as the first glimpse of sun entered the window, up he got, with stiff and grating joints⁷, but with a cheerful look;  不过,等第一道阳光一从窗格上射进来的时候,他就起身,四肢僵硬又格格发响,然而脸色却很愉快;

limped towards me where I lay; pressed his forehead again against mine; and said his Ramadan was over. 他一跛一拐地走到我床跟前;把他的额头紧贴在我的额头上;说他已经做好斋戒了。

Now, as I before hinted, I have no objection to any person's religion, be it what it may, so long as that person does not kill or insult any other person,  我已经在上面说过,我不反对任何人的宗教信仰,不管它是怎样一种宗教信仰,

because that other person don't believe it also.  只要那个人并不因为另一个人不相信它而要对他加以杀害或者侮辱就行。

But when a man's religion becomes really frantic⁸; when it is a positive torment⁹ to him;  不过,如果一个人的宗教信仰事实上变成一种如癫如狂的举动;

and, in fine, makes this earth of ours an uncomfortable inn to lodge¹⁰ in; then I think it high time to take that individual aside and argue the point with him. 成为一种实实在在是折磨他自己的事情,而且到头来还要弄得我们这个地球成为一个教人坐立不安的住处的时候,那么,我想,这就应该把那家伙拉到一边,跟他争辩。

And just so I now did with Queequeg. Queequeg, said I, get into bed now, and lie and listen to me.  我现在就是这样对付魁魁格。魁魁格,我说,现在上床来吧,躺下来听我说。

1 determined
