　　He was a small and dark, but rather delicate looking man for a sea-captain, with large whiskers and moustache, however; 这人身材细小，皮肤黝黑，不边，作为一个船长说来，倒有几分讨人喜欢的相貌，既有短髭，又有胡须，

　　and wore a red cotton velvet² vest with watch-seals at his side. 他穿着一件绒布的红背心，腰间还荡着一副表坠。

　　To this gentleman, Stubb was now politely introduced by the Guernsey-man, who at once ostentatiously put on the aspect of interpreting between them. 那个革恩齐人现在很客气地把斯塔布介绍给这位仁兄后，立刻就洋洋得意，装起一副给他们当翻译的神气。

　　What shall I say to him first? said he. 我应该先对他说些什么呢？他说道。

　　Why, said Stubb, eyeing the velvet vest and the watch and seals, 唔，斯塔布望着那件绒背心。表和表坠后，说道，

　　"you may as well begin by telling him that he looks a sort of babyish to me, though I don't pretend to be a judge." "你不妨先这样跟他说，在我看来，他就象是个毛头娃儿，虽然我并不想装得象个法官。"

　　He says, Monsieur, said the Guernsey-man, in French, turning to his captain, 他说，Monsieur（法文：先生。），那个革恩齐人用法国话对他的船长说，

　　"that only yesterday his ship spoke³ a vessel⁴, "他那只船昨天才说起过，有一只小船，

　　whose captain and chief-mate, with six sailors, had all died of a fever caught from a blasted whale they had brought alongside." 由于船旁拖着一条瘟鲸，弄得船长、大副和六个水手都死于热病。"

　　Upon this the captain started, and eagerly desired to know more. 船长听到了这番话，吓了一跳，急切地想再多知道一点情况。

　　What now? said the Guernsey-man to Stubb. 现在又该说些什么呢？革恩齐人对斯塔布说。

　　Why, since he takes it so easy, tell him that now I have eyed him carefully, 唔，既然他一下子就上钩，那么，就对他说，我已把他看得一清二楚了，

　　In fact, tell him from me he's a baboon⁵. 事实上，就对他说，我说他是只狒狒。

　　He vows⁶ and declares, Monsieur, that the other whale, the dried one, is far more deadly than the blasted one; 他发誓说，先生，另外那一条鲸，就是那条干了的鲸，比那条瘟的还更不行；

　　in fine, Monsieur, he conjures⁷ us, as we value our lives, to cut loose from these fish. 总之，先生，他千劝万劝我们，如果我们爱惜我们的生命，就得把这两条鲸都给放掉。
