Chinese president starts Central Asian tour

Chinese President Xi Jinping has arrived in the capital of Turkmenitan, Ashgabad, for a two-day visit to the Central Asian country.
The President is to hold talks with his Turkmen counterpart, Gurbanguly Berdymukhamedov.
China is the largest trading partner of Turkmenistan with bilateral trade reaching 10.3 billion U.S. dollars in 2012.
And the two countries jointly run the world's largest natural gas pipeline which is almost 8,000 km long.
Turkmenistan is the first stop in Xi Jinping's four-nation tour of Central Asia which will also take in Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan.
He is also due to attend the G20 summit in St. Petersburg in Russia as well as a state-leader meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in the Kyrgyz capital of Bishkek.
To have a closer look at the relationship between China and the four central Asian nations as well as China's role in the G20 and the SCO, CRI's Zheng Chenguang earlier spoke to Еkaterina Koldunova, Vice-Dean of the School of Political Affairs at the Moscow State Institute of International Relations in Russia.

China to enhance strategic cooperation with ASEAN: Chinese premier

Anchor:
The 10th China-ASEAN Expo is underway in Guangxi's capital city, Nanning.
Speaking at the opening ceremony, Chinese Premier Li Keqiang has vowed to bolster strategic cooperation amongst the pact.
CRI's Cao Yuwei has more.
Reporter:
The "Golden decade" is what Chinese Premiere Li Keqiang has said of the past ten years of cooperation between China and ASEAN countries.
He says bilateral trade volume has increased fivefold and the scale of cross-investment expanding threefold.
Li Keqiang also believes that both sides have the ability to build a "Diamond decade."
"We shall carry on what we've been doing and look into the future. This is a new historical starting point, to seek new strategic breakthrough. Based on enhancing mutual political trust, and with open and inclusive attitude, we will seek more pragmatic cooperation and let our strategic partnership to grow further. Since we have the ability to create the 'golden decades', we can also see a 'Diamond Decade.'"
He made the remarks at the opening ceremony of the tenth China-ASEAN Expo in Nanning.
Myanmar president U Thein Sein says China has become the biggest trading partner of ASEAN countries.
"In the past decade, ASEAN and China has developed the original friendly partnership of mutual trust into a strategic partnership, which we all cherish and are dedicated to enhance. Now, China is the biggest trading partner of ASEAN, and ASEAN is the third largest of it to China. We would like to see more economic cooperation of both sides."
Thein Sein is among visiting leaders from Laos, Cambodia, Thailand and Cambodia.
Although economic cooperation is the main talking point, Li Keqiang has also touched upon the territorial disputes in the South China Sea.
He believes the dispute could be solved through negotiation.
"The Chinese government is a responsible government, it is ready to seek solutions through friendship and friendly consultation. We believe that the disputes in the South China Sea are not issues between China and ASEAN and should not affect the broader interests of China and ASEAN relations."
More than 23-hundred companies attending the China-ASEAN Expo.
The Expo, along with a China-ASEAN Business and Investment Summit is running until Friday.

China and ASEAN to expand cooperation in 10th China-ASEAN Expo by Anjing

Anchor:
Also, against the backdrop of economic slowdown among major developing economies, trade cooperation is set to be the main talking point at this year's session.
CRI's Marc Cavigli has more.
Reporter:
This year marks the tenth anniversary of the China-ASEAN Expo, and the year also happens to mark the tenth anniversary of China- ASEAN Strategic Partnership.
China and ASEAN inked a free trade agreement back in 2002, with effect in 2010 when China implemented zero tariffs upon over 90% of ASEAN commodities.
Since then, the bilateral trade has expanded from over 54 billion U.S. dollars in 2002 to 400 billion last year, with an average annual growth rate of 22 percent.
Earlier, Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi announced that China and ASEAN are slated to upgrade their free trade area by accelerating regional economic integration and further opening up markets.
Against such backdrop, this year's China-ASEAN Expo is offering new services to boost regional cooperation.
Wang Lei is the Deputy Secretary of the China-ASEAN Expo Committee.
"In terms of the scope of trade, instead of focusing on commodities trading, we are expanding to investment, technical exchange and service industry such as tourism. So the expo is designed to provide a comprehensive platform for trade. Meanwhile, we are also expanding our regional cooperation. This year, China started talks on Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership or RCEP with countries including Australia and New Zealand. So we have invited representatives from countries other than ASEAN members to boost border cooperation. "
The RCEP is an initiative to link the ten ASEAN member states and the bloc's free trade partners including China, Australia, Japan, South Korea and New Zealand.
As an effort to engaging future RCEP members in the expo, Australia is invited to this year's event as an observer.
Julie-Anne Nichols is the Deputy Consul-General of Australian Consulate-General in Guangzhou.
"This is something very new to Australia. For example, I have been invited as an observer for the Australian government to come and to understand what the Expo is about. What China and ASEAN do through this trading. So after this trip, we hope you will see more Australian companies here in Guangxi. China is Australia's number one trading partner, so of course the Australian government is committed to continuing a very fruitful and expanding relationship with China. "
Australia will host the second round of negotiations for RCEP later this month.
Talks among the 16 nations over RCEP began in early 2013 and are scheduled to conclude by the end of 2015.
Once completed, the grouping which has a combined GDP of about 17 trillion US dollars, will account for about 40 percent of world trade.
For CRI, I'm Marc Cavigli.

Syria updates

Anchor
The Chinese government has urged the United Nations to carry out "fair, objective, and professional" investigation into the alleged use of chemical weapons in the Syrian capital, Damascus, on the 21st August.
Su Yi has the latest update about the Syrian crisis.
Reporter
Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Hong Lei says any international actions should be based on the results of the UN investigation.
“The results should be the premise and pre-condition for any action taken by the international community for the next step."
It has also been confirmed the United States has offered the Chinese its evidence about the alleged use of chemical weapons in Syria.
Meantime, the United Nations' refugee agency says at least 7 million people, or around one-third of the country's population, have been forced from their homes.
The update comes as the United States' plans for military strikes on Syria continue to face new twists and turns.
President Barack Obama is still lobbying Congress to support a military strike against the Syrian government for its alleged chemical weapons use.
But two of most outspoken foreign policy hawks in Congress, Republican Senators John McCain and Lindsey Graham, both say the administration has a long way to go to get its proposal passed.
Meantime, NATO says the bloc will not commit itself to any military action in Syria.
However, NATO's Secretary-General Anders Fogh Rasmussen says the decision could change if Turkey, a NATO member, comes under attack.
"I can assure you that we have all plans in place, already, to ensure effective defense and protection of Turkey, so at this stage I don't see a need for further contingency planning."
Some of the Syria's Arab neighbors, including Saudi Arabia, the UAE and Qatar, are on-record saying they're willing to commit some of their military assets to a military attack against Syria.
Meanwhile, Russia continues to stand opposed to any intervention in Syria.
Russian President Vladimir Putin has announced plans to send a delegation of Russian lawmakers to the US to dissuade the US Congress from endorsing US military intervention in Syria.

Japan government in $470m effort to tackle contaminated water at Fukushima

Earlier today, the Japanese government has announced that it will spend over 47 billion yen (470 million US Dollars) on emergency measures to deal with the radioactive water leakage at the Fukushima Dai-ichi Nuclear Power Plant.
Several leaks from storage tanks in recent weeks have added to concerns that the plant is unable to manage the contaminated water.
This is what the Japanese Chief Cabinet Secretary Yoshihide Suga had to say in a press conference.
"We will construct a shielding wall to stop the ground water (leaking) using the frozen wall method. We understand that construction of such high capacity decontamination facility costs about 47 (b) billion yen (470 (m) million US dollars) and the government will fund this."
The method mentioned there uses frozen earth to build a wall around the reactors to prevent contaminated water from coming into contact with groundwater.
Shinzo Abe, the Japanese Prime Minister, emphasized during a meeting of the Japanese nuclear task-force that his government is determined to resolve the issue.
All these come after Japan's top nuclear regulator raised safety concerns on Monday about the hastily built storage tanks and their foundations after signs of new leaks.

Brazil condemned US spying on President Dilam Rousseff

The Brazilian government has condemned the US spy programme that reportedly targeted Brazilian President Dilam Rousseff's internet usage.
In a joint news conference with Brazil's foreign minister, Justice Minister Eduardo Cardozo has described such action as unacceptable,
"If the facts are confirmed, this (referring to the US spy programme) would reveal an unacceptable and inadmissible violation of our sovereignty."
The news first surfaced in a report on Brzail's Globo TV on Sunday, which featured an interview with the Guardian journalist Glenn Greenwald. Greenwald, of course, has access to documents from former NSA contractor Edward Snowden which allegedly shows the US intercepted the Brazilian President's emails and telephone calls.
Foreign Minister Luiz Alberto said the government is already in contact with other countries to discuss this matter.
"We have already begun contacting various countries as I said, both developing and developed countries including BRIC (grouping of Brazil, Russia, India and China) members to discuss this matter, because we believe it involves all and affects all (of these countries)."
The Foreign Ministry also summoned the US Ambassador Thomas Shannon and said that Brazil expects the White House to provide a written explanation over such allegations.
In the same report, Mexico's President Enrique Pena Nieto is also said to have been targeted by the NSA. But so far, neither the President nor the Foreign Ministry in Mexico has commented on the matter.

Chinese stocks peak at 10 week high

Chinese stocks have peaked at a 10-week high.
The rally follows Premier Li Keqiang's speach at the China-ASEAN forum expressing confidence in China's abilities to achieve its economic goals for this year.
This comes after PMI figures indicated an expansion in both the manufacturing and services sector from July to August of this year.
The initial data from August has boosted optimism that China's economic growth is stablising and is likely to be sustained for the coming months.
The market response also owes partially to Goldman Sachs Groups' revision of its forecast, predicting greater expansion for the Chinese economy for the year 2013 as a whole.

The two have been in strategic partnership since 2011 - with Nokia being the major carrier of Microsoft's Windows Phone software.
The Nokia Lumia smartphone has pulled the market share of Windows Phone to 3.3% in a market where Google's Android and Apple's iOS systems enjoy 86% dominance.
Whilst the news prompted an initial hike in Nokia shares in Helsinki, the future prospects of the deal itself remains ambiguous.

Citic Resources contemplates Glencore's Cpper Mine bid

Citic Resources, the commodities trader of China's largets state-owned investment company is contemplating joining the bid for Glencore Xstrata's copper mine in Peru.
Glencore's Las Bamabs mining project near the Peruvian city of Cuzco has access to 10.5 million tonnes of copper resources.
The mine is currently in construction, with production expected to start in 2015.
Insiders predict the mining project could reach a value of more that $5 billion.
Citic is expected to place a bid as a part of a group.
In China, Chinalco Mining, Jiangxi Copper Co and MMG ltd are amongst the others companies contemplating offers for Las Bambas.
Swiss-based Glenco agreed to sell the mine earlier this year in a bid to gain approval from Chinese regulators for its $29 billion takeover of natural resources giant Xstrata.

Britain Manufacturing PMI exceeds market expectation

Official data shows manufacturing activity in Britain picked up speed in August, with the Purchasing Managers Index coming in at 57.2.
This comes in ahead of market expectation as most analysts had predicted the British PMI to come in at 55.
This is also the strongest reading for British manufacturing in nearly two-and-a-half years, and is also up on July's 54.6 reading.
But the Bank of England has insisted that its monetary policy will not change until unemployment falls below 7 percent.
Currently, the jobless rate is at 7.8 percent.
The positive data has also given the outlook for growth in the UK this quarter a much-needed lift.
It is projected that manufacturing activity in the UK will have a 0.7-percent increase on a quarterly basis.

Salaries in Japan face longest slide since 2010

Figures released today shows that salaries in Japan have experienced their longest drop since 2010 over the month of July.
The figures from the Japanese Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare shows that regular wages, that is excluding overtime and bonuses, dropped 0.4% year on year.
This makes July the 14th consecutive month of fall in average base wage in the country.
The figures spell out testing times for prime Minsiter Shinzo Abe's policy package dubbed Abenomics.
The government's fiscal and monetary stimulus plans have so far helped weaken the Yen, boosting competitiveness and corporate profits.
However, raising incomes and resuscitating domestic demand would also be essential to sustain the moderate economic recovery.
The figures will have a significant impact on the government's decision next month regarding future sales-tax level.
It is feared that setting the sales-tax too high would put an unbearable squeeze on households already suffering from energy-cost driven hikes in consumer prices.

India increases crude imports from Iran as rupee plunges

Indian policy makers are increasing crude imports from Iran in a bid to halt the floundering rupee.
India's biggest buyer of Iranian crude, Mangalore Refinery & Petrochemicals, is planning to increase its import of Iranian crude to five cargos in September compared to three in August.
Iran is the world's only crude producer that accepts rupee payments for oil.

Beijing to cut car registrations from next year

It's been confirmed that the Beijing Municipal authorities are working on plans to reduce the number of license plate registrations from next year.
The move is designed to improve the city's air quality and to ease traffic congestion.
The new quota will be announced in late November.
It is part of the city's ambitious plan to reduce the density of PM 2.5 pollutants by at least 25 percent by the year 2017.

"Beijing to consider fees for car congestion"
Beijing may impose a congestion fee for cars in the center of the city.
Observing the practice of peers such as London, Milan and Tokyo, the Chinese capital may limit car use in the center of the city, which authorities hope will cut PM2.5 levels.
Car emissions are believed to account for one-third of PM2.5, a major air pollutant, in most congested areas in Beijing.
The congestion charge would be levied mainly on vehicles in the downtown area.
The congestion fee is one of the key tasks of a five-year clean air action plan for the Chinese capital, which has been choking in smog, especially during winter heating seasons.
Authorities say Beijing will also ban private cars at certain times and areas next year.
The current restriction bans private cars one workday a week, while the stricter regulation will further reduce vehicles on the road by prohibiting certain vehicles from seriously congested areas.

"Classroom air quality on phones"
Parents can now learn about the air quality in classrooms by using their smartphones to scan QR codes for the latest readings.
A school in Hongkou District in Shanghai became the first in the city to have installed electronic data plates, which allow parents to check the environment quality index by scanning the QR codes.
At the Anshan Junior High School, parents accessed a detailed report of environment in some of the classrooms after scanning the code yesterday.
The report showed the redecoration date of a meeting room in the school. It also revealed that the floor, wall, paints, desks and chairs had all passed comprehensive environment tests.
Summer vacation is usually a time for schools and kindergartens to refurbish and carry out repairs.

"U.S. woman first to swim to Florida from Cuba without cage"
U.S. endurance swimmer Diana Nyad on Monday became the first person to swim from Cuba to Florida without the help of a shark cage.
The 64-year-old swam up to the beach just before 2 p.m., about 53 hours after starting her journey from Havana on Saturday.
Her team said she had been slurring her words while out in the water. She was placed on a stretcher on the beach and received an IV before she was taken by ambulance to a hospital. But her doctor later declared her essentially healthy and expected her to recover quickly from dehydration, swelling and sunburn.
It was Nyad's fifth attempt to complete the approximately 179-km swim. She tried three times in 2011 and 2012. Her first attempt was in 1978.
Nyad's previous efforts were cut short amid boat trouble, storms, unfavorable currents and jellyfish stings that left her face puffy and swollen.

"One in 5 twenty-somethings may be confined to a life of singlehood: study"
A study on Tuesday showed one in five people in their early 20s in South Korea may never get to meet their Mr. or Mrs. Right should the current trend of marriage avoidance continue.
The lead author of the study said that nearly a quarter of men and one fifth of women aged 20 in 2010 were expected to remain single until 45 -- practically a lifetime of singleton given that chances of getting married past that age are slim.
The lead author cautioned that the low marriage rate among young South Koreans could directly translate into low birth rates in the country. Only 2 percent of South Korean couples have children born out of wedlock.
Lee suggested that the government should do more to provide incentives to young people to get married early.
Currently, many of the programs aimed at raising the nation's birth rate are catered toward married couples, while singles or newly-weds are often excluded from these benefits.

Report on rugby's development in China

Anchor:
Rugby Sevens has made its debut at the National Games taking place in Liaoning this week.
CRI's Jordan Lee caught up with rugby fans in Shenyang to learn more about the sport's development in China.
Reporter:
Three men wandered through the glass display cases at Shenyang's Agricultural university, as they looked at photographs of old rugby teams and vintage rugby balls yellowed with age.
All three had played rugby decades ago, when the sport was unknown in China.
One of them, Xu Xiao Ming is pleased that his beloved sport is slowly becoming more recognized in China.
"It can help to make people tougher and teach them how to cooperate in team and it can make people braver. So it is a good sporting activity when it comes to nurturing the personality of students."
Back in 2009, when it was announced that rugby sevens would be included in the 2016 Olympics, China snapped into action.
Teams were sent to train in rugby powerhouses like New Zealand. Foreign coaches were brought in. And a small number of grassroots rugby programs began to crop up around China.
Rugby Sevens was also officially included in the 2013 Liaoning National Games.
A small group of fans turned out in Shenyang to support the twelve teams that qualified for rugby seven's debut competition.
Lu Zhi Sheng made the trip from Beijing to Shenyang to watch the games, with his team flag proudly sticking straight out of the top of his baseball cap.
"Rugby games are very intense, very good. I like them better than soccer."
Many Chinese want to follow rugby, but they struggle to understand the rules and nuances of the game, which was originally imported from the British.
After watching matches for a couple days, 24-year old Liang Ting said she's slowly picking up the game rule by rule.
"I only know all the ball players are only allowed to pass the ball backwards. They all have a strong sense of teamwork. And they all seem friendly though the game itself is fierce."
Technically, rugby isn't a complete novelty in China.
The earliest evidences of the game can be traced back to the late 1800's, after Shanghai opened to the West as a port city.
In the 1990's, China even had an international rugby player, Zhang Zhi Qiang or Johnny Zhang, who played for the famous Leicester Tigers club in England.
Jeff Stone, an American expat in Liaoning, was one of the several foreign fans watching the Chinese teams in Shenyang.
Stone was impressed by the mens and womens teams from Hong Kong and Shan Dong in particular, and said they are far ahead the other squads in terms of fundamentals.
"You can tell the difference in the training that's been going on. You can tell which team looks like college students playing for fun and the teams that brought their rugby clubs with them. They seem to be a bit more technical."
Stone expects to see a boom in Chinese rugby because of its inclusion in the upcoming Olympics.
"Because it's become an Olympic sport in 2016, the Chinese are probably going to pay attention because they really pay attention to olympic sports. And because you only need 7 people to play it. Well..7 plus subs. You should be able to find enough athletes to grow it."
But there is still a lot of work to be done.
China's national rugby team is currently ranked 66th, and has yet to qualify for a Rugby World Cup.

Roger Federer crashes out of US Open

In the US Open Roger Federer's hope of winning a sixth title went up in flames as he suffered a shock defeat to Spain's Tommy Robredo.
The Swiss ace lost in two hours and 24 minutes ending chances of a much anticipated first meeting between him and Rafael Nadal at Flushing Meadows.
The 32-year-old said he struggled to find his gear.
"I think I started badly, which put me down a break. Then I was able to come back in that one. But it's true, I mean, I struggled throughout, which is not very satisfying, to be honest. I mean, Tommy did a good job to keep the ball in play and make it difficult for me today. I missed so many opportunities. Rhythm was off. Yeah, when those things happen, clearly it's always going to be difficult, you know."
Rafael Nadal had to fight back from a set down against Philipp Kohlschreiber to avoid following Nadal out of the competition.
Meanwhile defending champion is set to take on Uzbekistan's Denis Istomin, in their rain delayed match, to reach the last eight.

Henrick Stenson has won the Deutche Bank Championship by two shots with a five-under-par round of 66, giving him a tournament record tying total of 22-under 262 in Boston.
America's Steve Stricker finished second while overnight leader Sergio Garcia faded in the final stages to tie for fourth.
Stenson's victory sees him overtake Tiger Woods to claim the top spot in the world rankings following his second place finish at the British Open and third place at the PGA Championships.
The Swede said he felt he was playing well but knew that a single bad shot could really cost him:
"To be honest I was ripping it when we started up after the rain delay. On the range I was hitting the ball as good as I had done all week. So I thought here we go, this is nice and obviously I was in the driver's seat, but there was still a lot of holes to play and a lot of guys behind me and I knew they weren't going to back off. So it was, I hit a couple of loose one's there but I kept it all in place, some good two putts and made one or two nice birdies. And of course the bounce back on 17 after missing the approach and then holing the bunker shot. That made it a little bit easier coming up 18.":

The American singer Justin Timberlake has given a short introduction of his new movie "Runner Runner" at a press conference in Berlin yesterday.
Timberlake plays Richie Furst, a Princeton graduate who needs to raise sixty grand to cover his tuition expenses and decides to try his luck at online gambling. Unfortunately, it doesn't quite pan out for him.
At the press conference, Timberlake says he is not much of a gambler.
And in reference to his recent performance at the MTV Video Music Awards, Timberlake made a joke about it...
"Being thirty two and trying to dance that much again at the VMAs, that was gambling! Got to get these old bones moving."
Since leaving the boyband *N Sync, Timberlake has been a huge success as a singer, songwriter and actor.
When asked whether money makes him happy, Timberlake said that the little things in life are much more important.
"I'm the type of person that I would live in a smaller house and, you know, be on a budget if it meant that I got to be doing what I love to do."
His new film "Runner Runner" will be released in Germany on October 17th.

FORMULA 1 STARS 'RUSH' TO PREMIERE

FORMULA 1 STARS 'RUSH' TO PREMIERE
Oscar-winning best director Ron Howard hit the red carpet in London yesterday for the world premiere of his new biopic "Rush."
The film focuses on the legendary rivalry of the 70's kings of the circuit, James Hunt and Niki Lauda.
In the film, the charismatic James Hunt is played by Chris Hemsworth and the actor says he is fascinated by the glamour of the racing world.
"I think it's the thrill of death that these guys throw themselves into and to either participate in something like that or to observe it, you know as someone in the crowd as a fan is just as thrilling half the time. And I think everyone gets swept up in it"
On the other hand, the Austrian driver Niki Lauda is played by Daniel Bruhl and the actor admits to being nervous about the upcoming role.
"It freaked me out because you know, I live in Germany, I grew up in Cologne, near the Nurburgring, so as a kid I already knew about Niki Lauda, and he's a legend, a living icon. I was so nervous."
Hunt's surviving family was also there to lend support and his son Tom was full of praise for the movie.
"I think Ron and his team have done a really good job, as good as anyone in Hollywood would do, so we're incredibly proud of him and looking forward to seeing everyone's reactions to it."
"Rush" is released worldwide from 12 September 2013

Serbian performance artist talks about her new work of art and collaboration with Lady Gaga

Marina Abramovic says she's only interested in originals. And Lady Gaga, with whom Marina's been collaborating with, is one of them.
That's the view of the 66-year-old Serbian performance artist when she spoke about her new project, "The Abramovic Method", at the 70th Venice Film Festival. Ms Abramovic has some pretty nice words for to say for Lady Gaga.
"I was very impressed by her. She's 27-years-old. She works like hell. She said to me, 'You know what it takes to get where I am?' she's very original. She's very inventive, she's very generous with her influences and she said 'I want to learn' and she started working with artists"
"I completely divide the world in two categories: the originals and the ones who follow. And I'm not interested in anyone else. I'm only interested in originals and she's definitely an original," she added.
Lady Gaga has worked with the Serbian artist for a tutorial video. It is centered on exercises of "The Abramovic Method". Abramovic says the video aims to heighten the participants' awareness of their physical and mental experience in the present moment.
The method is currently being practiced at a museum in Milan.
