Top NewsChinese President Stresses People-to-People Exchanges between China and JapanAnchor:
President Xi Jinping has highlighted the role of people-to-people exchanges in promoting China-Japan relations while attending a gathering4 of over 3-thousand Japanese visitors in Beijing.
CRI's Sophie Williams reports.
Reporter:
While meeting with the Japanese delegation5 in the Great Hall of the People, President Xi Jinping encouraged more people-to-people exchanges between China and Japan.
"The China-Japan friendship is rooted in the people, and the future of the bilateral6 relationship is in the hand of the people of the two countries. The more obstacles we face in bilateral relations, the more we need to strengthen people-to-people exchanges, creating conditions to improve the bilateral relationship. The Chinese government supports these exchanges and hopes people from all walks of life, especially young people, can commit themselves to bilateral friendship."Recalling the long history of interaction between the two neighbors, President Xi said peace and friendship factor strongly in the collective mind of the two peoples.
He said the China and Japan should take history as a lesson and develop a mutual7 friendship:
"The Chinese government attaches great importance to ties with Japan. Despite the twists and turns in the bilateral relationship, we stand ready to work with the Japanese side to advance the neighborly friendship and cooperation between the two countries on the basis of the four political documents."The four documents refer to a set of agreements reached by China and Japan since 1972 that aim to advance bilateral relations.
As this year marks the 70th anniversary in the victory of Chinese People's Resistance War against Japanese Aggression8, President Xi also stressed that any distortion of history is not acceptable.
"The aggression conducted by Japanese militarists has brought huge suffering to the Chinese people and cast a shadow over bilateral relations. Past experience, if not forgotten, is a guide for the future. I believe, not only people from China and other Asian countries invaded by Japan, but also the Japanese people with a sense of justice and conscience, will not allow any attempt to distort or beautify the history of invasion conducted by Japanese militarists."Toshihiro Nikai, chairman of Japan's Liberal Democratic Party's General Council who leads the delegation, offered a commitment to cement the China-Japan friendship.
"I hope our Chinese friends, led by President Xi Jinping, can help us to open a new chapter in the bilateral relationship. It's our mission to maintain peace and friendship between our countries. Japan is ready to join hands with China to make relentless9 efforts to promote bilateral relations."Japanese government officials, businessmen representing many sectors10, and members of social organizations are in the 3-thousand strong delegation.
The Chinese and Japanese participants at the gathering have also issued a joint11 proposal to enhance people-to-people exchanges and cooperation in pursuit of the China-Japan friendship from generation to generation.

China, Japan to boost tourism cooperationChina's tourism authority has said it welcomes and supports Japanese companies looking to invest in China's tourism industry.
Li Jinzao, head of China National Tourism Administration, made the remarks while meeting yesterday with Toshihiro Nikai, chair of the General Council of Japan's Liberal Democratic Party.
Li added that China hopes Japan can introduce attractive policies for Chinese companies to invest in Japan's hotels and travel agencies.
Nikai is leading a 3,000-member delegation in Beijing to boost cultural, tourism and trade exchanges.
This is the largest mission between the two countries since the Japanese government's "purchase" of the Diaoyu Islands three years ago.
Chinese President Xi Jinping met with the delegates on Saturday.
Premier Li Visits Peru's National MuseumChinese Premier Li Keqiang has visited Peru's National Museum of Archaeology12 with his Peruvian counterpart Pedro Cateriano.
The two leaders also jointly13 opened an exhibition on the origins of Chinese civilisation14.
Speaking from the museum, Li says both countries have made "contributions to human development" and there are "deep cultural roots" between China and Peru.
"Agricultural civilisations in Peru and China made contributions to human development, and surely development between us will increase so that we can have an even brighter future. Despite being a small museum, we can see the deep cultural roots of both countries here."Cateriano says the distance between China and Peru is not a problem.
"The distance between China and Peru is only geographical15, because for Peruvians it is normal to have links with Chinese people."Li's visit to the South American country is aimed at boosting trade, investment and cultural exchange.
The two sides have agreed to begin feasibility studies for an ambitious railway linking Brazil's Atlantic coast with a Pacific port in Peru.
Peru already has a free trade agreement with China and Chinese President Xi Jinping has pledged 250 billion US dollars in investment in Latin America over the next 10 years as part of a drive to boost China's influence in a region long dominated by the United States.
Li's visit to Peru follows stops in Brazil and Colombia, where he has signed economic partnerships16 with the countries.
Next on his agenda is a stop in Chile as he concludes a swing through South America.
Premier Meets Chinese Enterprises Representatives in PeruChinese premier Li Keqiang has sat down with more than 50 representatives from Chinese enterprises in Peru.
The Premier calls on the enterprises to abide17 by local laws and customs, be socially responsible, and help to upgrade the trade relationship between China and Peru.
"Peru has the largest population of Chinese origin in Latin America. You must keep on good terms with local residents and fulfill18 related social responsibilities."Li also suggests the enterprises group together when tapping into foreign markets so as to reduce risks.
"The equipment manufacturing industry is expected to play a leading role in China's move to upgrade industry and exports. When in a country that has a different system and culture, only by grouping together can enterprises in the equipment, mining, and financial industries develop better."Peru is a major copper19 and iron ore exporter to China.
Chinese state-owned enterprises, including Shougang Group, Chinalco Mining Corp and China Minmentals Corporation, have invested there.
Premier Li's upcoming visit to boost China-Chile strategic tiesAnchor:
Chinese Premier Li Keqiang's upcoming visit to Chile is expected to provide a golden opportunity for the two countries to enhance mutual trust and practical cooperation.
Chilean authorities expect the visit will boost bilateral trade and investment.
Our reporter Guo Yan has the details.
Reporter:
Former president of Chile Eduardo Frey says there's a huge demand for the two countries to upgrade bilateral trade, and he hopes premier Li's visit can take economic ties to the next level.
"China and Chile should expand trade cooperation and seek more common ground. Those previously20-reached agreements have been unable to fully21 serve the development of the bilateral ties. The two countries have signed FTA and mutual investment agreements and I expect, during Premier Li's visit, the two sides will reach an agreement to avoid double taxation22, which will greatly boost mutual investment between enterprises from both countries."Chile was the first South American country to establish diplomatic ties with China and the first in the region to sign a free trade agreement (FTA) with China.
Under the FTA, imports and exports between the countries will be exempted23 from tariffs24 by the end of this year.
Liu Rutao is the economic and trade counselor25 of the Chinese embassy in Chile.
"Usually, the period of tax reduction after the signing of a FTA is 8 to 10 years. Chile was the first to sign a FTA with China, So, by now, the China-Chile FTA is the only one that has got through to this stage. This year, more than 98 percent of imports and exports between China and Chile will enjoy zero tariffs."Diego Torries, a senior official from Chile's foreign ministry26, is responsible for the country's trade affairs in the Asia-Pacific region.
He hopes trade agreements to be signed on Li's visit can help the country to draw more investment from China.
"Boosting free trade between the two countries is one of Premier Li's goals. We want to learn more about China's interests and meanwhile, try to seek common interests between us so as to deepen our trade relationship. We also hope the new agreements to be signed soon will not only promote bilateral trade, but also help attract more Chinese enterprises and build Chile into a regional hub for Chinese investment."The overall trade volume between the two countries reached over 34 billion U.S. dollars last year.
The FTA has diversified27 trade, with an increase in the number of Chinese automobiles29 entering the Chilean market.
Today, Chinese-made cars account for 17 percent of all cars in circulation, and that figure is on the rise.
Marsillio is a Chilean civil servant and says products made-in–China are very popular among the locals.
"Made-in-China products are used widely in Chile. They are of good quality. It indicates the high level of Chinese technologies and the high competitiveness of Chinese products. In particular, many Chinese auto28 brands have entered the Chilean market. As far as I know, Jianghuai and Shanghai vehicles sell very well here."The Chilean official also hopes to see more benefits of the Sino-Chilean relationship spread to the ordinary people of his country.

China's Fox Hunt Campaign Caught New SuspectChinese Police have arrested another suspect accused of financial fraud, under China's 2015 Fox Hunt campaign against criminals who have fled aboard.
The suspect surnamed Li was one of the principles involved in a financial fraud case worth nearly 2 billion yuan 11 years ago.
Fourteen other suspects had been caught already. Li was the last one still at large.
Li was caught in China's Hunan Province. He had fled abroad but returned under a false identity to avoid capture.
Feng Jie, deputy director of the Economic Investigation30 team of Taiyuan Police Bureau, says they got Li's entry information from Shanghai police.
"We recently received information of Li from Shanghai police. Then we rushed to Hunan Province to catch him. He had gone abroad three times before, but felt panic when he left China. Then he told us that he was relieved after finally being caught. Whether you change your identities or run to other countries, you will finally be caught."China's 2015 Fox Hunt campaign is aimed at cracking down on corruption31 and financial fraud.
Fatal Shooting Latest ProgressAnchor:
The authorities have reviewed the evidence and have upheld the ruling that a cop involved in a fatal shooting in Heilongjiang province was justified32 in his actions.
The original ruling had triggered public doubt regarding the conduct of police.
Our reporter Huang Shan brings more details.
Reporter:
The review of the fatal shooting incident was carried out by a prosecutors34 in Harbin.
The conclusion reached is the same as that of an earlier internal investigation done by the city's railway police department.
It confirms that the shooting at Qing'an County Railway Station was done out of duty and the officer, Li Lebin, did not violate protocol35.
Prosecutor33 Sun Chengyi is in charge of this case.
"We reviewed surveillance footage of the scene, listened to affidavits36 from witnesses and the person concerned, and looked at photographs of evidence such as the baton37, gun, the police ID and the permission to use firearms. After investigating this evidence, prosecutors decided38 that Officer Li Lebin was lawfully39 carrying out his duty and was within his legal rights to use the gun in this case. "The review of the incident was carried out after the internal investigation report triggered some public doubts on the verdict, especially regarding use of the gun and the legitimacy40 of the video footage.
One point of contention41 regarding the video is that position of an arm band on the officer's uniform appears to switch, with one video angle showing it on his left arm while another camera shows a band on the officer's right arm.
But prosecutors examined the video and say it is authentic42 and un-edited, and the arm band appears to change position because one of the cameras had been set to a "mirror image" setting.
In the video footage, the Xu Chunhe is seen assaulting the police officer, continuing to throw punches at Li despite multiple warnings before the policeman opens fire.
One witness says he believes the footage published is in line with what he saw.
"He pushed his mother towards the police, and then he grabbed the child next to him to shield himself from the police. The policeman couldn't help but hit the child once, however after the first hit he stopped. The man saw that the policeman stopped, so he just threw the child aside."Xu Chunhe was traveling with his 81-year-old mother and three children when the incident took place on May 2.
After the incident, local railway police offered compensation of 200,000 yuan to Xu's family.
However, later, news emerged that the compensation was only hush43 money.
The village official from where Xu lives has denied this.
Meanwhile, authorities have also detained a man for spreading online rumors45 that journalists behind the reports on this story have received money from the local authorities to speak well of the police.
The man, surnamed Chai, first published the rumor44 through his Weibo account.
After being detained, he admitted that his conclusion was groundless.
"Because the news was all over the internet at that time I just reviewed some of the pieces, and thought that there were only two journalists reporting on this incident, so I just made the conclusion and put it online. I really thought it would perish quickly when other information poured in. I put it online just to relieve my stress from work."The video also showed that Xu barred other passengers from checking into the station before the clash erupted and that the officer had tried to stop him from doing so.
Autopsy46 report suggested that Xu was drunk at the time of the incident.
For CRI, this is Huang ShanWomen Activists47 Cross DMZThirty women activists from 15 countries have arrived in South Korea after crossing the Demilitarized Zone that divides North and South Korea in a symbolic48 act of peace.
The group reached the South by bus after their request for a walk across the zone were denied by both sides.
A South Korean bus picked them up on the North side of the DMZ this morning and transported them over the demarcation line to South Korea.
Among the activists was Nobel Peace Prize laureate Leymah Gbowee from Liberia.
"To think that we came here to end the war, I think this is the first step in the right direction and we firmly believe that every little step is the right step in the right direction."The event was designed to call attention to building a reunified Korea.
The participants arrived in Pyongyang on Tuesday, where they held a peace symposium49 and shared their thoughts with local women regarding putting an end to violence and war.
The Koreas have remained divided since the Korean War in the early 1950s ended in an armistice50, not a peace treaty.
The DMZ is one of the most heavily fortified51 borders in the world.
Experts Call for Long-term Rehabilitation52 Plan for NepalAnchor:
Health care experts have called for a long-term rehabilitation plan for Nepal, where a massive earthquake and aftershocks have exposed the woeful state of medical facilities across the country.
Situations outside major cities are even worse as remote areas have only basic medical centers that are ill-equipped to handle serious injuries.
CRI's Zhao Jianfu has more.
Reporter:
Medical staff in Nepal have been struggling to treat a large number of injured with limited supplies since a massive quake struck the country almost a month ago.
According to a World Health Organization report, the country has only about 2 physicians and 50 hospital beds for every 10,000 people.
Sunil Pokhrel, a physical therapist at Tribhuvan University Teaching Hospital, says most of his patients require long-term care.
"The injury, the percentage of injury is very high and the most of the people we have are having long term disability and they require long-term cure. So I think for the long term rehabilitation they will need support with necessary devices as well as in the health related needs they need to have support from international community."According to a data from the country's national statistic53 bureau in 2011, nearly 2 percent of Nepal's 28 million people are listed as disabled.
The figure is likely to have risen after two massive quakes hit the country on April 25 and May 12.
Nearly 18,000 people were injured. But, so far, figures for the total number of people disabled due to their injuries are not available.
Twenty-seven-year-old Rishi Khanal is one of those injured.
He was buried for more than three days after the April 25 earthquake. Doctors had to amputate his leg.
Khanal used to be the breadwinner in his family. He is calling for financial assistance as he is uncertain what the future will hold.
"For the future I need help from any organizations, I need financial help."Handicap International, a non-governmental organization, is now helping54 the Nepalese government plan rehabilitation programs.
The NGO surveyed patients across four hospitals in Kathmandu and found that out of the 500 injured people they spoke55 to, 30 percent underwent a limb amputation56 or suffered from an injury requiring long term rehabilitation.
Chiara Retis, a rehabilitation technical coordinator57 for the organization, says Nepal need to speed up its planning process and move into an implementation58 phase.
"The fact that today there has been this big disaster and this big number of injured people. In fact it highlights again this need speeding up the process, hopefully, for a comprehensive work. So now we'll look at the immediate59 needs, the big number of injured but this will be also an opportunity to start implementing60 in actual plan."The Nepal Physiotherapy Association says currently Nepal has only about 23 physiotherapists at work and needs at least another 20 to join its rehabilitation program.

Burundi opposition61 figure Zedi Feruzi shot dead amidst growing violenceAnchor:
The leader of a small Burundian opposition party has been shot dead in the capital. The killing62 comes as Burundi is rocked by weeks of protests against President Pierre Nkurunziza's decision to run for a third term.
CRI's Poornima Weerasekara reportsReporter:
The body of Zedi Feruzi, the head of a small opposition group in Burundi, was found outside his home in the capital Bujumbura on Saturday. The bullet-riddled body of his bodyguard63 was found lying next to him.
The killings64 are another chilling reminder of the violence that has gripped this tiny country in Sub-Saharan Africa in the past month.
Eye witnesses say that there were government soldiers present in the neighborhood at the time of the killing, but they chose to turn a blind eye.
"I was like 10 to 15 meters away when I heard shots being fired, we didn't know what it was. I got there and found out it was my neighbor who had been killed and it's someone big. He is the leader of the Union for Peace and Development, he was opposed to the President, he was against the third term, and I think they killed him like this because of that."Trouble began in Burundi in April when President Nkurunziza announced that he would run for a third term.
Thousands of protesters took to the streets saying the former rebel leader, who has been in power for nearly a decade, was not entitled to do so.
Critics say the President's decision violates a peace accord - the Arusha agreement - that ended a brutal65 civil war which had claimed the lives of more than 300,000 civilians66. Two weeks ago an army general even attempted to seize power while the president was in Tanzania. The coup67 was crushed in just two days.
Nkurunziza has since unleashed68 a wave of violence, crushing dissidents. The streets of Bujumbura have become the scene of bloody69 battles as waves of protesters continue to clash with the army and militias70 loyal to the president.
The unrest has also seen more than 200,000 people flee to neighboring countries, mainly Tanzania.
Refugees say they are afraid that the unrest may lead to another full blown civil war.
"The biggest reason that made me decide to run away is that Pierre Nkurunziza decided that he wanted to be in power for 15 years, while in the Arusha agreement he had agreed on 10 years. I saw that things were getting a bit bad when he decided to run for another term. As the election date draws nearer, I think we are going to see more violence and I decided that we flee before things get bad."Burundi has been largely peaceful since 2000. But the latest spate71 of violence is also rekindling72 ethnic73 tensions between the Hutu and Tutsi communities. This was what led to the previous civil war.
Presidential elections have been announced for June 26 amidst this chaos74. Both the EU and the African union have urged the government to postpone75 elections until peace is restored.
But as the latest killing of an opposition politician suggests, the situation continues to deteriorate76.

Sci&Tech (Sunday)Anchor:
It's time now for this week's science and technology feature.
The Russian-based YotaPhone has made its appearance on the Chinese market. A group of Chinese scientists have submitted a new Lupus drug to clinical trials. And some developers in Japan have invented the world's first eye-tracking virtual reality headset.
Let's catch all of that and more with CRI's Wenjie.
Reporter:
Russian-based YotaPhone has launched the newest edition of its smartphone series in Beijing.
CEO Vlad Martynov says the YotaPhone 2 is the only smartphone in the world to use a secondary E-ink screen.
The design is a standard smartphone on one side, and the other side is similar to an e-reader, such as a Kindle98.
"We started three years ago with the idea that the interaction with smartphones could be much better than at this time. We was disrupted by a few things; first, if you read a lot from a smartphone, your eyes die quite fast, it is not easy on your eyes."The Android-based phone allows users to run apps on the e-reader screen as well, with a battery life up to five days.
The phone has already made waves in China after Russian President Vladimir Putin gave the first Yotaphone to President Xi Jinping as a gift at the APEC meeting in November in Beijing.
It's yet to be seen how it compares head-to-head against the likes of Apple, Samsung, and Xiaomi.
YotaPhone 2 is relatively99 expensive, starting at the equivalent of about 800 US dollars.
Chinese tech giant Lenovo is teaming up with Alibaba group to sell televisions online.
It is Lenovo's latest attempt to catch up with market leaders like Xiaomi and LeTV.
Lenovo introduced a 55-inch TV that can play ultra-high definition and three-dimensional video contents.
The product is just under 3-thousand yuan, or around 480 US dollars, which is about 1-thousand yuan cheaper than Xiaomi's flagship TV.
Lenovo's TV will run on Alibaba's YunOS operating system, a four-year-old system seen only in a small number of devices.
Alibaba will also provide video and an online retail100 platform for the TV.
Lenovo will also partner with search engine giant Baidu and Shanghai-based BesTV to provide users more than 800-thousand hours of content.
A group of Chinese researchers have developed a new drug to treat Lupus.
The China Food and Drug Administration has approved the drug for clinical trials.
Lupus is an autoimmune disorder101 that can damage the joints102, kidneys, heart, lungs, brain and blood.
Millions of people suffer from Lupus in China.
However, current clinical treatments rely heavily on the use of hormones103, which can cause a series of side effects.
Zuo Jianping, a professor with the Shanghai Institute of Materia Medica, and his colleagues have spent 15 years working on the new drug from Chinese herbs.
"Our group is trying to develop a new drug from the traditional Chinese medicine herb or the natural products. So our new development of the new drug is from the artemisinin analogue104. The drug candidate is water-soluble artemisinin."However, Zuo said it could take ten year or more the complete the clinical trials.
Should clinical tests prove successful, the new drug could be the first viable105 chemical drug against Lupus to enter the market since 1955.
Biorobotics researchers in France have created an aerial robot which could navigate106 autonomously107 by visual sights, just like the flying insects.
Inspired by research on honeybees, researchers at Aix-Marseille University's Institute of Movement Science created the BeeRotor.
BeeRotor is a tandem108 rotorcraft which stabilises itself by using an electronic eye similar to that of an insect.
Franck Ruffier is the co-head of the Biorobotics Research Group.
"So, the whole idea comes from this question that is a bit crazy which is; 'What does the insect do to stabilise (itself) without information on the orientation109 of the centre of the earth that is used by all mini drones, by all micro aircrafts up to the Ariane rocket?'"Unlike current drones, BeeRotor can adjust its speed and avoid obstacles without having to measure gravity, speed or altitude.
Current aircrafts use a complex system of sensors111 and estimators to measure all acceleration112, including gravity, to help pilots plot their course.
Instead, BeeRotor uses 24 pixels to scan 24 different directions of space, which allow it to constantly realign its gaze and keep parallel to the nearest surface.
BeeRotor's eye works like an autopilot function in relation to the environment around it.
Experts found the eye-based reorientation system improved the performance of the aerial robot and its ability to avoid obstacles in unstable113 environments.
Even without an airspeed sensor110, the rotorcraft showed it was able to adjust its pitch and speed, navigate autonomously and land safely.
BeeRotor measures 47 centimetres in length, weighs 80 grams and was built to mimic114 the body frame of an insect.
By using the BeeRotor, experts can create insect-scale aerial robots, thus access previously untouchable smaller areas.
Developers in Japan have invented world's first eye-tracking virtual reality headset, allowing users to interact with the environment just by looking at it.
The headset, called FOVE, uses eye-tracking technology to giver wearer an immersive and completely hands-free experience.
Lochlainn Wilson, FOVE's co-developer and chief technology officer, say their technology is very unique.
"Eye tracking is game-changing in VR. It allows for much more complex and subtle interaction than has been possible previously. By knowing exactly where the user is looking, characters in virtual reality can react to your gaze and return it naturally or avoid it or respond or question. But what really sets us apart is eye tracking, of course. So, with eye tracking we enable a whole new world of interaction in VR. We enable really sensitive emotional experiences that could only otherwise be experienced in real life."FOVE's eye-tracking technology uses two in-built cameras in the head mount to recognize the users' eye movement.
The next version of the device will use iris77 recognition to load user profiles.
The Tokyo-based start-up was founded by Wilson alongside CEO Yuka Kojima.
The makers83 of FOVE say the technology presents an opportunity to re-imagine various tasks and social interactions in areas like medicine and education.
Wilson says the technology could also benefit people with certain disabilities.
"There's a lot of people who could benefit from this technology; people who, for example, have limited freedom with their hands and cannot use computers very well.
