Top NewsXi-Ma Meeting Turns Historic Page in Cross-Strait Relations: OfficialThe mainland's Taiwan affairs chief has said that a positive consensus has been reached from the first meeting between leaders of the two sides of the Taiwan Strait since 1949 on Saturday.
Zhang Zhijun, head of the Taiwan Work Office of the Communist Party of China Central Committee, made the remarks in a statement released late Sunday.
Zhang, who is also head of the Taiwan Affairs Office of China's Cabinent, says that both sides have agreed to continue to stick to the 1992 Consensus during the historic meeting between Xi Jinping and Ma Ying-jeou in Singapore.
During the meeting, the two leaders acknowledged major achievements made in peaceful development of cross-Strait relations since 2008.
Zhang says the two sides agreed to continue to promote peaceful development of cross-Strait relations and safeguard peace and stability of the Taiwan Strait.
The statement notes that such consensus has set the direction and foundation for the development of cross-Strait relations.
It notes that the 1992 Consensus reflects the one-China principle and clearly defines the fundamentals of the cross-Strait relations, making it clear that the mainland and Taiwan belong to one China.
It adds the meeting shows that on the basis of the one-China principle, the two sides are fully5 capable of promoting the peaceful development of cross-Strait relations through enhancing communication and mutual6 trust.
Xi-Ma Meeting Hailed by Experts from across Taiwan StraitsAnchorPolitical observers from both the mainland and Taiwan are suggesting Saturday's meeting between Xi Jinping and Ma Ying-jeou in Singapore is going to create a legacy7 for both leaders.

ReporterThe meeting on Saturday afternoon in Singapore, the first time the leaders from the mainland and Taiwan have met face to face in 66-years, is believed to be the culmination8 of years of trust-building on both sides.
China Central Television politicial commentator9 Zhou Qing'an suggests the "1992 Consensus," otherwise known as the "One China Policy," is what made the meeting between the two leaders possible.
"As Xi Jinping suggested in his speech, the two sides across the Taiwan Straits are 'one family' which both share the same Chinese dream. This is a very important thing to keep in mind when we talk about the development of cross-Straits relations. The idea of a 'community of shared destiny' is not only the consolidation11 of the 1992 Consensus. More importantly, it is the basic concept for the further development of cross-Strait relations. I would say the Chinese dream is a common dream shared by the 'Community of shared destiny'."The "1992 Concensus" holds that both sides agree there is only one China, but can maintain their own interpretation12 of what that means.
Through this, it allowed both sides to open the door for political reproachment after years of mutual isolation13.
But while there have been ups-and-downs in the relationship across the Straits over the past 23-years, professor Yu Tzu-hsiang with Shih Hsing University in Taiwan says Taiwan leader Ma Ying-jeou's time in office has seen a significant amount of headway made in reproachment with the mainland.
"Ma Ying-jeou has said very proudly that the cross-Straits status quo established in his 7-years' service is a consensus both in Taiwan and between the two sides of the Straits, and is of great benefit to Taiwan. The meeting between the leaders of the two sides shows that Ma's path over the past 7-years is correct."Many observers have been keying on one statement made during Xi Jinping's speech on Saturday where he said the mainland and Taiwan can never be pulled apart no matter how many ordeals15 the two sides have undergone and how long they have been isolated16 from each other.
Yin Cunyi, vice14-director of the Institute of Taiwan Studies with Tsinghua University, says it's this idea which both sides should use to keep the political process moving forward.
"The short speech Xi Jinping made was full of emotion, particularly when he said nothing can sever17 the kinship across the Straits. I think it demonstrates the historical responsibilities the leaders on both sides understand and have chosen to accept. As such, increasing cross-Strait exchanges and communication is only going to benefit people on both sides."Over the past 7-years, 23 different agreements have been signed between the mainland and Taiwan.
Through this, cross-Straits trade has increased to some 170-billion US dollars a year, and continues to increase.
At the same time, over 8-million people are making their way to and from the mainland and Taiwan every year.
It's widely expected more direct flight routes will also be opening up, allowing that number to increase even further.

Wang-Koo Meeting Witness Welcomes Historic Xi-Ma MeetingAnchorOne of the key figures who was present at the 1993 "Wang-Koo meeting" has spoken highly of Saturday's historic meeting between Xi Jinping and Ma Ying-jeou.
CRI's Xie Cheng has moreReporterThe "Wang-Koo meeting" refers to a meeting held in Singapore in April 1993 between Wang Daohan, head of the mainland's Association for Relations Across the Taiwan Straits, and Koo Chen-fu, chairman of the Taiwan-based Straits Exchange Foundation. The meeting paved the way for the improvement of cross-Strait ties.
Ch'iu Chin'i, former vice chairman of the Taiwan Straits Exchange Foundation, says he has been waiting for this moment for 22 years.
"I am really moved and excited, because it is the first time for the leaders from both sides of the Taiwan Strait to have such a meeting after 22 years. The hand-shaking is a historic moment. This is an epoch-making milestone19 for cross-Strait relations."Ch'iu says he hopes the meeting will be a good momentum20 that will let Taiwan participate in the dream of the Chinese nation, and then be involved in the programs like the 'Belt and Road' initiative and the Asian Infrastructure21 Investment Bank.
Meanwhile, Taiwan businesspeople in the Chinese mainland have expressed their confidence for the future development of cross-Strait relations after the historic meeting.
At present, over 50,000 companies in the Chinese mainland are owned by Taiwan business people.
Chou Feng-chen, is with an association representing Taiwan businesspeople based in south China's Guangdong province.
She says they all expect cross-Strait exchanges to be better facilitated.
"Of course we expect the cross-Strait exchanges to become smoother, simpler and easier. For example, we will transfer investment to the service sector22. In addition to restaurants, we will invest in education or the finance sector in the Chinese mainland. It will be easier for us to do this. So I think these are our expectations."Hsu Hsueh-jung, a Taiwan businessman in Jiangsu Province, says he believes people in Taiwan will be relieved by this historic meeting, which will benefit the environment for businesses.
"I believe this historic meeting will make us Taiwan people more relieved. So we can do more sincere and friendly businesses and push forward further communications. This is the most important."Latest stats from the Ministry23 of Commerce show trade between the mainland and Taiwan reached some 138 billion U.S. dollars in the first nine months of this year.
Mainland imports from Taiwan more than tripled that of exports to the island during the period.
Taiwan is the mainland's seventh largest trade partner and the sixth largest source of imports.

Xi's Visits to Vietnam, Singapore Construct New Consensus on Bilateral, Regional CooperationChinese President Xi Jinping is back in Beijing after his groundbreaking trip to Singapore and Vietnam.
While in Singapore, President Xi Jinping has taken part in a series of activities to mark the 25th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi says Xi Jinping's time in Singapore and Vietnam has also helped create a new consensus on bilateral and regional cooperation between China and Southeast Asian nations.
As part of his time in Vietnam, Xi Jinping addressed Vietnamese lawmakers in the country's National Assembly to help mark the 65th anniversary of diplomatic ties between the two countries.
A number of agreements connected to Beibu Gulf24 were also signed as part of his time in Hanoi, including issues connected to sea border demarcation and possible joint25 exploration of resources in the area.
China Has More Than 200,000 JournalistsChina has about 208,000 registered journalists, including nearly 117,000 TV reporters.
The State Administration of Press, Publication, Radio, Film and Television made a statement on Sunday, the country's 16th Journalists' Day.
Male reporters make up about 53 percent, and most of the journalists have university degrees.
On Friday, China granted press credentials27 to employees of news websites, giving interview and reporting rights to online media for the first time.
China previously28 banned most websites from reporting news, only allowing them to edit and publish news from traditional media sources.
Air Pollution Reaches Hazardous29 LevelsAir pollution reached extremely hazardous levels yesterday in Shenyang, capital of northeast China's Liaoning province.
Data from the Shenyang Environmental Protection Agency showed the density30 of the poisonous tiny airborne particulates31 known as PM2.5 topped 1,000 micrograms per cubic meter at their maximum levels.
Local authorities have warned residents to stay indoors and demanded that power plants cut output.
Marathon Fever Sweeps across ChinaAnchorMarathon fever has swept across China, with about 75,000 participants running in marathon competitions in six cities on Sunday morning.
And as marathons gain momentum in China, they bring with them huge business opportunities.

ReporterThe 2015 Shanghai International Marathon was set to have 35,000 runners.
Over 100,000 people had applied35 and the organizer had to draw lots to decide who would get to participate.
An unnamed participant who was eligible36 to run in the Marathon in Shanghai said that he felt sorry for those who failed to win the lottery37.
"Actually, most good runners were not lucky enough to be selected for the marathon this year. It's like a lottery. Eligible participants had to win a lottery."Zhang Zhenpeng is the person in charge of the Beijing Bird's Nest Half Marathon which also kicked off on Sunday.
He said he didn't expect that for all places to be filled up so soon.
"We opened 8,000 placements and predicted these might be filled in half a month. However, runners were so enthusiastic that all placements were filled at night since the application began at 09:00. Just in one day. During the day, there were two system crashes because of the huge visitor volume."Data released by the Chinese Athletic38 Association shows that Chinese marathon competitions have increased rapidly.
While only 22 marathon competitions were held in 2011, the number increased to over 120 this year.
The association predicted the number will rise above 200 next year.
The popularity of marathons across China also brings about economic benefits.
Zhang Yongliang is the director of the Marathon Office of the Athletics39 Administrative40 Center of China's General Administration of Sport.
He said the marathon fever has also helped to boost revenue for local governments.
"For example, marathon competitions in Xiamen City have brought 230 million yuan in revenue each year. However, it is far behind the Tokyo marathon which earns about two billion yuan each year. But many cities have realized that marathon competitions can promote tourism. For example, the city of Hengshui held the first marathon on September 23, 2012, boosting the city's tourist revenue by 300 percent."Business insiders believe the marathon frenzy41 in China has hugely boosted the sports industry in which sponsors like Nike are among the biggest winners.
And related industries like the catering42 business, accommodation, sports drinks and healthcare products also benefit from the increasingly popular sport.

More Russians Arrive Home from EgyptMore Russian holidaymakers have flown home from the Egyptian resort of Sharm el-Sheikh to Moscow.
Passengers have been prevented from taking large cases on their return journeys due to security concerns.
Tourists returning to Russia's other regions will have their luggage delivered by local delivery companies.
Meantime, Russian Deputy Prime Minister Arkady Dvorkovich said that a team of Russian inspectors43 has been dispatched to Egypt to conduct security checks at the country's airports.
"The first group has already left to carry out security inspections45 at Egyptian airports. Together with Egyptian colleagues, they will carry out this inspection44 in the coming days. The second and the third groups leave today to inspect all the main airports and to offer their recommendations on additional security measures."The announcement comes following a tragic46 air disaster when a Russian Metrojet plane traveling from Sharm el-Sheikh to St. Petersburg crashed in Egypt's Sinal Peninsula late last month, killing47 all 224 people aboard.
The British government and U.S. officials said intelligence suggests the plane was downed by a bomb, but Egypt says there's still no confirmation48 on the specific cause of the crash.
Russian Airliner49 Crash 'Game-changer' for Aviation Industry: Emirates Airlines PresidentEmirates Airlines President Tim Clark says the tragic Russian passenger jet crash on late October could be a 'game-changer' for the aviation industry and would result in demands for stringent50 aviation security worldwide.
Clark said that although there are comprehensive protocols51 and procedures in place, the crash would prompt a review of security guidelines.
"This means that the aviation industry, as well as the various countries involved in all of this of which Europe, the Middle East, America, will be getting into some kind of caucus52 forum53 to find out what can be done, what needs to be done, what the gap analysis is between what is being done and what needs to be done in the future. But don't underestimate the complexities54 of doing that."He added that he has ordered a security review but was not suspending any flights as a result of the disaster.
Meantime, a Russian Orthodox church service has been held in a St. Petersburg cathedral to mourn the victims of the deadly airliner crash.
A bell atop St Issac's Cathedral tolled55 224 times, one for each person killed during the disaster.
Egyptian Tourism Industry Suffers from Russian Plane CrashThe recent crash of a Russian passenger jet has affected56 the Egyptian tourism market.
Security concerns following the crash caused a flight ban into local and national airports in Egypt by the British and Russian governments.
Basel Khedr manages the Sultans Gardens Hotel in Sharm el-Sheikh, where the plane took off. He says his hotel's occupancy rate has dropped drastically since the crash.
"I can tell you that before the incident we were at about 92 per cent occupancy of guests in house, we were doing quite well. Now here we are a week later and we are at 60 per cent of occupancy. I have got 550 employees, I am just one hotel and it is not just about the guys that work for me it's about all the staff and all the people who support the tourism industry indirectly57."The Russian plane was headed for St. Petersburg and disintergreated over the Sinai Peninsula on October 31, killing all 224 aboard.
The British government has since resumed flights and started to shuttle vacationers home.
Local supplies, transportation and insurance industries are all expected to see drop in revenues related to the incident.
Myanmar Holds Historic General ElectionAnchorVoting in Myanmar's historic general election has come to an end.

ReporterMore than 33 million eligible voters started to go to polls early on Sunday morning.
Many voters said they hoped the new leader will bring the country prosperity.
"My feeling is that I am excited as this only takes place once in five years. I also want the country to be prosperous and developed.""I hope the elected person will be the one the country needs."This year's general election is the second held in Myanmar after the previous military government handed over state power to a civilian58 government four years ago through the first election in 2010.
The election is being held under the secret polling system and is being closely monitored by more than 10,000 local and international observers.
In the lead up to the elections, parties, candidates and voters complained of incomplete voter lists and also a lack of general information on the voting process.
But Chief of the EU election observer mission, Alexander Lambsdorff, says things got off to a smooth start.
"I can say at this time, on the morning of election day, what we are observing is a procedure that looks as if it is rather reliable, it is not free of flaws or shortcomings, but we didn't expect that, but some of the things that have been discussed before do not seem to pose a great problem at this point in time."A president will be selected from three candidates who will be put forward by the newly elected two houses of parliament and the military, which automatically gets 25 percent of parliament seats.
President Thein Sein said before the vote that the government and the military would accept the results and that the elections would be as free and fair as possible.
Despite her popularity, NLD leader Aung San Suu Kyi is barred from becoming president by the constitution.
However she has said that she would lead the country if her party wins, without elaborating on how this will be possible.
The results of the election are to be announced in a week's time.

A Wave of Violence Remains61 without SolutionAnchorTensions between Palestinians and Israelis have been on the rise since October.
The West Bank city of Hebron is one of the hot spots of violence.
CRI's Victor Ning reports.
ReporterIn Hebron, the largest city in the West Bank, Israel has set up more than 200 checkpoints, with over 100 surrounding the old city, where some 400 Jewish settlers, protected by 2,000 Israeli soldiers, live separately among 5,000 Palestinians.
Issa Amro, a Palestinian human rights defender62 and a resident of Hebron, says Israel has tightened63 security measures recently. Now only Palestinians who live in the old city can enter there after registration64.
"You have to register your name and ID number, and get a number at the checkpoint. I live inside the area, but I'm not allowed to go there, because I refuse to be a number. I am not a number. I am a human being. I don't need a permit to go in and out from my house, so I climb from walls and from neighborhoods and from fields to reach my house now."They city has been a flashpoint site during the recent upheaval65 since the start of October. Of over 70 Palestinians that have been killed by Israeli forces, some 30 are from Hebron.
Sheikh Abu Khader Jabari, leader of the largest Palestinian clan66 in Hebron, says the wave of violence is a translation of the frustration67 of the people due to the Israeli occupation.
"After so many years of peace talks without progress, people feel that there is no solution. On the contrary, Israelis are taking more lands from the Palestinians. If the Israeli policy will continue the way it is now, I think the Palestinians will continue their struggle, because they prefer dying with dignity to living under this harsh situation."No'am Arnon, spokesman for the Jewish settlements in Hebron, on the other hand, takes a hard line.
"We know there were and are still and will be security problems, it's not a surprise. We are not terrified. We decided68 to come to live here, to renew the Jewish life, and to make sure terror shall not win. We come here to live as a normal community. We did in the past and still today want to live in peace with neighbors who want to live in peace."However, Palestinians in Hebron say more Palestinian houses have recently been attacked by Jewish settlers. Issa Amro gives an example.
"Hundreds of settlers cut the fence to break into a Palestinian family. And the Israeli soldiers did nothing to stop the settlers who were blocking the door and who went to the roof. We put a big wood block behind the door. Everybody of the family was crying, (especially) the women. I called the Israeli police. I called everybody. Nobody came. For seven hours the family was crying."Palestinian Prime Minister Rami Hamdallah has recently called for Palestinian security forces to be allowed to patrol in certain areas of Hebron in order to provide "security and protection" for Palestinians, but this call has been rejected by Israel.

Burundi Announces Forced Weapons Disarmament ProcessBurundi's security minister Alain Guillaume Bunyoni announced that a forced weapons disarmament process had been launched in that country following months of violence and civil unrest.
Bunyoni added that United Nations security forces are also in Burundi and will remain until peace is restored.
"This operation will take as long as it takes but the operation does not prevent normal lives from continuing. But the only thing is that there were rumors69 that made civilians70 to flee."The announcement comes a day after an attack on a bar in Bujumbura that left nine people dead.
At least 200 were dead and tens of thousands have left the country since Nkurunziza announced he would seek a third term in office months ago.
French Foreign Minister Holds Informal Talks Ahead of COP21French Foreign Minister Laurent Fabius opened three days of informal talks in Paris on Sunday alongside environment ministers and representatives from nearly 70 countries.
Fabius said the talks are aimed at finding a path to compromise ahead of the COP21 climate conference.
One key issue under discussion on Tuesday is financing - how rich countries can provide financial and other support to help developing countries reduce emissions.
Organizers expect at least 40,000 people to attend the COP21, including thousands of activists73 from environmental, human rights and other groups.
The COP21 aims to reach an agreement to limit the rise in global temperatures to below two degrees Celsius74 between pre-industrial times and the end of this century.
The conference runs between 30th November and 11th December.

China to Mark Sun Yat-sen's 150th AnniversaryChina's top political advisory76 body's plenum has decided to hold a series of events to mark the 150th anniversary of the birth of Sun Yat-sen next year.
The anniversary falls on Nov. 12, 2016.

Snow to Linger in NE ChinaForecasters in China are warning the heavy snow that has swept across many parts of northern China will continue to fall in the northeast until at least Wednesday.
Inner Mongolia is expected to see snow and sleet81 in the coming days, while parts of Heilongjiang and Jilin are expecting heavy snowfall.
At the same time, forecasters are warning of heavy showers and possible flooding in Guangxi and other parts of southern China on Tuesday.
The storm system moving into the area is also expected to drop temperatures by as much as 10 degrees in certain parts of the south.
Israel's Netanyahu to Meet Obama, Discuss Security, AidIsraeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said he hopes to lay out the grounds for U.S. military support to Israel for the next decade.

Traders will look to retail84 data next week for further support of consumer-driven economic growth.
Major retailers85 Macy's, Kohl's, Nordstrom and JC Penney are scheduled to report earnings86 this week, while retail sales and consumer sentiment are due Friday.
Other economic reports incoming include the US producer price index and the Job Openings and Labor60 Turnover87 Survey.
But stocks could spend most of the next few days grinding sideways, after posting six straight weeks of gains, especially the Nasdaq composite, which outperformed with a 19-point gain on Friday, for a weekly gain of 1.9 percent.

All eyes on the Chinese shopping spree known as double 11 or Single's Day, which is considered as a Chinese version of Black Friday, falls on Wednesday and is a key driver for sales at e-commerce sites, particularly Alibaba.
China Foreign Trade Decline Speeds up in OctoberChina's foreign trade dropped 9 percent year on year to some 2 trillion yuan, or 325 billion U.S. dollars in October.
This marks the eighth consecutive90 monthly decline.
Exports dropped 3.6 percent to 1.2 trillion yuan and imports plunged91 16 percent to 833 billion yuan.
The General Administration of Customs said trade surplus surged 40 percent to 393 billion yuan.
HSBC analyst88 Qu Hongbin attributed the drops mainly to commodity prices, subdued92 external and internal demand, noting that exports to emerging markets experienced sudden decline.
Statistics show China exported more mechanical and electrical products while exporting fewer labor-intensive products such as clothing, shoes and textiles in the first ten months.
The European Union remains China's largest trade partner followed by United States and ASEAN.
China's Forex Reserves Rise in OctoberChina's foreign exchange reserves rose to some 3.5 trillion U.S. dollars at the end of October, ending five months of decline.
According to the central bank, the reserves grew by 11.4 billion dollars in October.
Gold reserves climbed from 61.2 billion dollars at the end of September to 63.3 billion dollars at the end of October.
Analysts attribute the rise in forex reserves to the central bank decision on August 11, to let the market have a greater say in forming the yuan's central parity93 rate against the U.S. dollar, which led to a depreciation94 of more than 4 percent in August.
The current intervention95 is due to concerns over excessive fluctuations96 of the exchange rate, but China's ultimate goal is to make market supply and demand play a larger role in the rate formation system.
CSRC to Resume IPOs as Market Rebounds97 from RoutAnchorChina's securities regulator has announced that it will resume initial public offerings by companies after halting the fundraising mechanism since July.
The suspension was part of emergency measures to contain a massive meltdown that sent the stock market plunging98 over 40 percent in just a few weeks.
The regulator says ten of the 28 companies that had already gained regulatory approval for new share sales before the market rout18 will be among the first to launch their IPOs after Nov 20.
It has also announced a set of new measures to reform the current IPO mechanism, which marked a further step toward a market-oriented listing system.
The measures include scrapping99 the requirement for full payment of shares in advance when an investor100 bids to subscribe101 to new shares.
The CSRC said this will prevent the IPOs from locking up too much capital.
At the same time, the regulator further simplified the pricing procedure for small-cap IPOs under 20 million shares, which will help reduce the financing costs of smaller companies.

China Releases Guideline on Mutual Recognition of FundsChina has released a guideline on mutual recognition of funds to help securities investments in the country's inland areas and Hong Kong.
The mutual recognition scheme, which was launched on July 1 this year, allows funds domiciled on either side to be sold in the other's market.
According to the central bank, only the total amount of funds needs to be monitored, and no approval is needed for the quota103 of an institution or product.
The funds raised through trans-market issuance can flow between Hong Kong and the inland areas in Renminbi and in foreign currencies, or can be changed by agents at banks.
The guideline said the settlement via Renminbi is encouraged.
Since July, more than 10 mutual recognition of fund products have submitted applications and are expected to be put on the market by year's end.
China to Enhance Crackdown on Infringement104, Counterfeit105 on InternetThe Chinese government says it will do more in the areas of intellectual property infringement and counterfeiting106 in e-commerce.
According to a circular issued by the State Council, government supervision107 and self-regulation by the industry, along with public participation108 will bring healthy development to e-commerce.
There will be campaigns in agriculture, food, drugs, cosmetics110, medical equipment, electric products, auto59 parts as well as house decoration materials.
Internet providers are urged to cooperate with authorities.
Enterprises providing distribution, storage, mail and express services should insist on real-name systems.
The government will also publish "black lists" on those venders and service providers who fail to follow the rules.
Huawei Smartphones Enter Cuban MarketChinese telecom giant Huawei has inked a deal with Cuban telecom company Etecsa to sell its smartphones in the island nation.
This signals Huawei's further expansion in the Latin American and Caribbean region.
Huawei hopes its smartphones will be warmly received in Cuba, where Chinese products, such as home appliances, have been growing in popularity.
