 January 27th, 1945In the final month of World War II, Soviet¹ troops liberate² Nazi³ Germany's concentration camps of Auschwitz and Birkenau in Poland, that's where up to a million and a half people, 90% of them Jews perished, as part of the Nazi's final solution to wipe out Europe's Jewish population.

1973In Paris, Peace Accords are signed officially bringing America's military role in the Vietnam War to an end. More than two years later, Vietnam is reunified under Communist rule when South Vietnam falls to North Vietnam.

1967At Cape⁴ Canaveral, Florida, tragedy sets back the American quest to put a man on the moon. Astronauts Virgil Gus Grissom, Edward White and Roger Chaffee die in a flash fire during a test aboard their Apollo One Spacecraft.

1756Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, among the greatest composers of classical music is born in Salzburg, Austria.

And 1885Composer Jerome Kern, whose works include the musical 'Show Boat' is born in New York City.
