The last Jewish settlers leave the Gaza Strip. That happens nearly 40 years after Israel captures the territory during the Six-Day War. The Israeli withdrawal¹ makes way for Palestinian control in Gaza. 1996. In Washington, President Bill Clinton signs welfare reform into law.

"Today we are ending welfare as we know it, but I hope this day will be remembered not for what it ended but for what it began."The measure ends guarantee cash payments to America’s poor, and demands work from its recipients². 1989.

Huey Newton, co-founder of the 60s militant³ group the Black Panthers, is shot to death by a drug dealer⁴ in Oakland, California. Newton, who struggled with drug addiction⁵, was 47 years old.
