The speech clinches¹ the Democratic presidential nomination² for Bryan but he loses to Republican William McKinley in the fall.

1947Britain's Princess Elizabeth is engaged to Lieutenant³ Philip Mountbatten. The future Queen Elizabeth II marries the future Prince Philip months later.

1997Boxer Mike Tyson is banned from the ring and fined three million dollars. That's his penalty for biting Evander Holyfield's ear during their WBA Championship fight in Las Vegas.

1956"My momma always said life was like a box of chocolates."Tom Hanks, who won the Oscar for Best Actor in back-to-back years, is born in Concord⁴, California. Among his roles: Philadelphia, Forrest Gump, Apollo 13, Saving Private Ryan and the Toy Story movies.
