The last Jewish settlers leave the Gaza Strip. That happens nearly 40 years after Israel captures the territory during the 6-Day War. The Israeli withdrawal¹ makes way for Palestinian control in Gaza. 

 

 

 

1996. 

 

In Washington, President Bill Clinton signs welfare reform into law.

 

"Today we are ending welfare as we know it, but I hope this day will be remembered not for what it ended but for what it began."

 

The measure ends guarantee cash payments to America’s poor, and demands work from its recipients². 

 

 

 

1989.

 

Huey Newton, co-founder of the 60s militant³ group the Black Panthers, is shot to death by a drug dealer⁴ in Oakland, California. Newton, who struggled with drug addiction⁵, was 47 years old.

 

 

 

1920. 

 

Ray Bradbury, the science fiction author whose works include Fahrenheit⁶ 451, is born in Waukegan, Illinois.
