In downtown Manhattan, New York City once again memorializes the events of September 11th 2001 with a pair of brilliant white beams called “tribute in light".
"Tribute in Light" is the work of several teams of architects and designers. The display is organized by the Municipal Art Society.
"Tribute in Light" was first illuminated1 on March 11th 2002, six months after the attack and again on September 11th 2003. It has shown on every September 11th since.
Funding for "Tribute in Light" has been guaranteed through 2008 with discussions underway to produce them again in 2009. The beams consist of 88 space cannon2 searchlights organized in two 50-by-50-foot squares that sit atop the Battery Garage six blocks south of Ground Zero.
And so for one more year at least, the two familiar beams pierce the heavens and serve as a silent reminder3 of lost lives and the two gleaming towers that were once the signature of the Manhattan skyline.
