Diet and exercise are key to maintaining normal blood sugar levels. Now researchers say sleep may play an equally important role. Experts at the university of Buffalo1 followed nearly 1,500 adults for seven years. They singled out those who had normal blood sugar at the start of the study but had impaired2 fasting glucose3 at the end of the study. These participants were compared to those who had normal blood sugar throughout. They found how much sleep a participant got played a role in their blood sugar reading. Those who got less than 6 hours of sleep were nearly 5 times more likely to have abnormal sugar levels.Experts say this study confirms previous research that found adequate sleep is critical for overall health. They say sleep should be assessed all doctors' visits.
